Braveheart is a good story, and well done. It has nothing to do with actual real history, of course, but I don't require my stories to be real in that sense. I actually prefer if they are not (hence my interest in fantasy and sci-fi). I thought "Gladiator" was a good movie as well, for th...

I find myself very torn on this. I find Alatar's arguments persuasive, I really do, but maybe just not enough. Mel Gibson I'm unsure about, I know that his attitude was suspected well before his recent outburst, so it's not just a case of drunken ramblings, but if the film itself doesn't actively pr...

I didn't see this thread until today or I'd have wished you luck! But I see you didn't need it at all. :D I'd love to hear your recording, especially any bits that you might have sung yourself? I knew about the weight loss already of course, but it bears saying again how brilliant I think that is to...

I've never read a Georgette Heyer I didn't like :D I think my favourites, of the top of my head and quite possibly misremembered, are "A Surfeit of Lamphreys", "Frederica" and one that involves two couples an elopment and a stay at an Inn (could be any of them really) the name of...

I confess that I'm now somewhat curious as to the third word, as I can only think of one 'unmentionable'...

No need for an answer (which couldn't be typed here anyway), I'm just worried about my limited vocabulary now ;)

Here's a link to a google search for Margaret McDonald Mackintosh which has a few more of her Gesso panels. And here's one to Charles Rennie Mackintosh's paintings, although he's probably most famous for his design and architecture work.

I'm probably biased because they're Glaswegians ;)

I just noticed that Yov rated my favourite Mrs Mackintosh painting as his number two, what good taste he has! I saw the original of the painting in my sig this weekend and was literally blown away by it. It was in a totally perfect setting too the, Mackintosh designed, Art School in Glasgow. I can't...

What a lovely thread :) I have a couple that I can think of off the top of my head; And he took her in his arms and kissed her under the sunlit sky, and he cared not that they stood high upon the walls in the sight of many. And all the host laughed and wept, and in the midst of their merriment and t...

I don't know if B77 is the only democratic board in existence currently (although Yov's post suggests that it isn't currently so itself?) but I don't think it was the first one or only one if the 2003 dates on the votes on this board are accurate. Edited to add: I posted this link in case Artie was ...

I love Deadwood and can't say that the languge used, formal or vulgar, bothers me in the least - but were someone to use language like that in my company (not a friend obviously) it would, rightly or wrongly, colour my perception of them. When the use, misuse or non-use of swearing is really a choic...

I do see your points Jny and won't protest my innocence any further ;), but I do still think that you are painting with far too broad a brush. Generalisations about a race, or a continent of people, are surely one of the causes of the kind of prejudice you are discussing? I'm not suggesting, for one...

Yet I won't make a generalization and say that all Europeans are anti-Semitic. Still, it so happens that most of the Europeans I know personally are anti-Semites. I won't characterize them as friends, but just people I know from business. It is something I find nearly impossible to be rational abou...

Well I'll second Alatar on Raymond Feist's Magician and on George R.R. Martin - neither are Tolkien but they are very good. And I'll second Di on Guy Kay - but not Fionavar! It was his first attempt at writing his own stuff and to my mind it suffers from a lack of experience and reads as somewhat cl...

It seems Israel is to be held to a "higher standard" than other nations, that the Israelis are to be held to a "higher standard" than other people. I can sort of follow the reasoning that leads to this idea, but it still stinks in my opinion. It smacks of blaming the victim. I d...

Life-size. Built by a man name Robert Howden, beginning in 1927 and finishing in 1932, modeled on castles of his native Scotland. One of my best swoons for Whistler, back in the days of his own swooning thread, was based on the ending of Great Expectations (a beautiful bit of writing that I have always loved despite its detractors), so I might try to dig up a copy and join you all. :) I'm just not sure if I'll have the time to...
