I remember when my dad told all us kids we were star parts one night at dinner. I thought it was the coolest stuff ever. I still do. We are the collected dust and ash of an ancient sun. One day, we will be dust again, and so the cycle goes. It awes me.

"Decay" would be a better choice of word. I think. Assuming I even know what you mean. But your thoughts in that sentence are similar enough to mine that I think I do. When something dies, their soul leaves and their body falls apart, yes? And now I am about to stroke off into the thermody...

And I would say the same if Bush were a Democrat! It is not partisan politics that is making me criticize Bush at this point. After all, even in this thread I have explained how unhappy I am about Hillary Clinton's despicable behavior around the war. :agree: I can't in good conscience support a war...

Obama has a way of presenting himself and his message that transcends race, gender, and social class. He's managed to stand up not as a person but as an idea. A very nice idea that people like. A very nice idea that I am slowly becoming convinced that he can follow through on. He has all the makings...

You know, that's okay. We could use some hope right now.

Obama's got the record to back himself up too. It's not the most extensive political record in the field, but it is there. He's not quite as fizzy as I first thought.

I'm not religious, but I believe that souls exist. I don't claim to have any empirical basis for that belief. As yovargas pointed out somewhere else on b77, you can't get empirical without a formal definition. I'm not sure I can even answer your question coherently, but whenever this topic comes up,...

OMG! Video games are going to make your kids want to have sex with aliens! Burn them all!

I think it's pretty telling that the people criticizing the game have never played it but seem to know all about it.

Hillary and Bill have that effect on people Tosh. Even before Bill was elected, I am told. I'm not sure why, but perhaps it's because I'm young. Honestly, the knee-jerk dislike among many for the Clintons is what makes me leery of Hillary as a president. She might do a fine job, but Christ almighty,...

I'm still hoping that South Carolina and Super Tuesday will make that question moot.
Yes.

I'm starting to rethink my own plans for Super Tuesday. She must be stopped!

Most of the good intriguey stuff happens either before or concurrent with The Hobbit, which is why I'm anxious about a movie that would be set between The Hobbit and LOTR. That was, as far as I can tell from the literature, a waiting time. There were some rumbles that something was amiss, Saruman hu...

Your doctors and dentists are probably thinking that being familiar will put you at ease. They are clearly wrong. When I went through EMT training I was told to ask patients how they wanted to be called. That's what I did, though I also used "Ma'am" or "Sir". We tried to treat th...

Heh.

My dad does railroad law. He charges on a sliding scale depending on what the client can afford, their cause, and how much he likes them. If they treat him bad, he charges his double-dickhead rate. I'm not sure what that is, but it usually gets the point across.

There's good, bad, and ugly lawyers. Just like any other profession. I reserve lawyers and doctors for Big Problems. They are the people that help you clean up the detritus of a Really Bad Day, or, on rare occasions, help you out when you see a Really Bad Day coming and would rather not live the exp...

Well, if you can't carry your own biological child, should you have your own biological child? Are people entitled to their own biological child even if they have to subvert biology to produce it?

First off, I think money should be irrelevant to any ethical question. If something can be ethically done for free, does paying for it automatically make it unethical? It add complications. When no money is exchanged, it's easier to determine that consent is being given out of complete free will. W...
