You da boss, vison. You tell us what to do, not the other way around. :P

I would suggest that if we do Great Expectations you either change the title of the thread or start a new thread, as it might be just a tad bit confusing otherwise. ;)

My vote would probably be for Great Expectations. But I'll try to struggle along with whatever is chosen.

...which suggests that he didn't think it quite as "unfinished" as we do ;). He insisted to his publishers that it was finished and ready to go in the late 40s... That's not entirely correct, actually, Mith. Here is what he said to Rayner Unwin, in June of 1952: As for The Lord of the Rin...

But then, it is a very unusual (one might say unique) tree! Jn, I think you explain very well why it is that Tolkien was so desperate to have the entire Saga of the Jewels and the Rings published together. They really are one Tale (as Frodo reminds us). I will have more to say later (later on an Ent...

(oh, is this not the the Alatar swoon thread?? sorry.) Every thread is the Alatar swoon thread. I'l be in the Silmarillion thread if you need me.... Don't be shy about speaking up, even about earlier portions of the book. As you can probably tell, that discussion has a very Entmootish feel about it...

Okay, then I'll hold off on moving on to Beren and Lúthien ().

(I think Ath might still have some more to say, and I'm still very much hoping to hear from Sassy!)

'Love'ly post, Ath. I couldn't agree more. It is Beren, the last man of the House of Bëor, gazing down at Doriath from the Mountains of Terror, where “it was put into his heart that he would go down into the Hidden Kingdom, where no mortal foot had yet trodden” ensuring his union with Lúthien...

Not sure Prim (its probably been close to 20 years since I was last there). But Ax, you are completely correct that the scope of the thing gets lost in a picture. I definitely recommend if people take a trip to D.C. that they venture out to Hains Point and check it out.

Which groups, leaders and factions with real power in the Arab world do you have in mind that could work with Israel or other members of international community to accomplish peaceful coexistence on this date, on this planet? Right now, I don't believe that there is a viable negotiating partner. Bu...

Would it be correct interpretation to say that you do not believe that political and spiritual leaders of the Arab world are serious in their calls for destruction of the state of Israel and murder of its citizens? Or that you believe that the majority of the population of those countries rejects t...

Wasn't it Beth that observed that it looked like a crushed bagel? Or was I confused?

Thanks for the correction, Anthy. I'm not sure why I thought that the quote that Mith was citing was from Lord M; it was in fact Jn's. Yes there is no question that Saddam used chemical weapons against both the Kurds and the Iranians. And yes, Saddam is to blame for that horror. But (just to ...

No, you are entirely correct, Mith. Saddam Hussein did use chemical weapons against the Kurds. Technically, however Lord M.'s comment is correct because the Kurds are not Arabs. The Iraqis also used chemical weapons extensively against the Iranians (with the tacit approval and assistance of the U.S....
