Tom - The reason why that goal was disallowed is rather...complicated. It seems the other player in the box was not a passive spectator because he was standign directly in line between the striker and the goalkeeper and so became 'active', thus making it an offside. Or something. The USA really impr...

Hobby. . If it wasn't for the fact that I get only one week with Dave this year, you know I'd do anything I could to meet you. But.. one week ...no one should have to deal with seeing the man they're in love with for one week out of the year. :( Ath - My family were having a long discussion ab...

I'm usually rather detached during the World Cup. I'm vaguely supporting England (who have been rather a disgrace so far) but I owe my emotional allegiance to my club, not to any particular country. I am rather pleased that Liverpool players have done rather well for their respective countries so fa...

The New York Times review is hilarious. :D Meanwhile the albino monk, whose name is Silas and who may be the first character in the history of motion pictures to speak Latin into a cellphone, flagellates himself, smashes the floor of a church and kills a nun. Teabing, who strolls out of Engli...

The first time I watched this was with a huge group of girls from college. The bath scene led to a large number of animal noises being heard in various parts of the room  I don't think that scene was particularly necessary, no. But it's nice that they put in a scene for women to objectify an ...

Firth is a wonderful Darcy of course. The first time I watched this version I had a bit of trouble seeing Ehle as Lizzie. But she acts the role so well that my image of Lizzie has come to match her. I love that the opening lines of the book are inserted into the dialogue and actually said by Lizzie....

...And they've done it. Protests by Catholic groups here in India have led the government to delay the release of the movie. They want it banned (but they don't want to ban the book, inexplicably  ). The movie will now only be cleared for release after representatives of these groups have a...

There was also the rather silly scene between Daniel and...Tess, was it? In the first book. About the moral relevance of sheepgut. :D

I agree with Ethel, ideas are the real subject of the trilogy.

There's an incredibly boring chapter in the second book where Eliza teaches the French court about economics. Skip it. :D I've always found the period fascinating legally and scientifically as well. Stephenson makes me think about commerce (money flowing in from the new world). Plus, Dryden! Milton!...
