There's also a difference between saying there is no God, and not saying anything about God at all. Most movies, most forms of entertainment even, don't deal directly with the subject at all. Neither does this movie. Again, I haven't read the books, so I don't know what they say, but I fail to see ...

Zounds! Yesterday, I caught up on over three months' worth of "episodes", and it felt like the equivalent of not being able to put a book down. Really, Tosh, this just so impressive to me. I can SEE the story unfolding so clearly in a very different way than I see it while r...

Killing God? Apparently Mr. Pullman has made it his mission to "kill the idea of god". I don't think he's going to succeed!!! But the chat around Tay's school is this bit about killing god. Man, if you want to make kids want something, tell them it's wicked. These people never learn. No d...

Ah!

You're right! Their first habitation was Almaren in Middle-earth.

That pretty much takes care of most of the "among others", doesn't it?

And I just realized that of course, Finwë came from Middle-earth to Aman.

Some of the Numenorians, however........ :suspicious:

Same could be said for a number of other entities, who are regarded as most important in Middle Earth. Finwë? Manwë? Bueller? Yes. Except for Bueller. And really all Fëanor accomplished in Middle Earth proper amounted, was to march north in full snit and get his butt whooped. But Fëanor leadi...

Anyway... to be pedantic Fëanor among others never entered Middle Earth. Holby-dear, hang on to that Snit........ :er: I'm afraid that Fëanor did actually enter Middle-earth......it was just the super-sized version - the one before Beleriand slipped under the waves after a little skirmish known as ...

Thank-you, Sass, for bringing this thread back to mind. So much of what you say about "layers of truth" within Tolkien's works speaks right to my heart (as well as my head, and that's a rare convergence!) You have inspired me to crack the knuckles of my brain cells, and put together a post...

I wonder if Tolkien was thinking of the implications of Saruman being a Maia when he wrote his death. I rather think he was just writing what seemed to work for Saruman's character --- the greatness of his fall, the utter ruin of what was once so good. Others would know more about this than me, tho...

And now for something completely different. :D On the purely practical side, if Nienor had been clad in the clothes of Menegroth (which I assume she would be, given that she had been living there) then surely Túrin would have recognized that, wouldn't he? And in doing so, wouldn't it have been possi...

Athrabeth, if I don't already know you from another place, may I make your acquaintence now? Hello. It's great to meet you, as well. :) Question to...

Knowing the films is better than knowing nothing about LotR, which was true of most people before the films came out. But I hate to think of people deciding not to bother to read LotR because they saw the films—thinking they've had the full experience, when the book is so much more than the films e...

Don't get me wrong, he's a fascinating character, but he's also a total bastard. :agree: I "like" his character because of the layers that Rowling steadily peeled back. He was absolutely the most intriguing character of the series for me........until the final revelations in the DH added ...

Thanks, Rebecca! :)

Rowling's expositions of Snape and Dumbledore (among a few other aspects of the tale) have a subtlety and sophistication that really did surprise and impress me.

The more and more I read, the less and less I understand the ‘Snape is a really great guy and a better man than Dumbledore’ line. He hits a new all-time low with his ‘I see no difference’ line at Hermione’s cursed and rapidly-growing teeth. I can’t possibly understand why Lily didn’t want him… I do...

In my first readings of LOTR, I don't think I "got" Frodo at all. It really did feel that through him, I'd been swept into this grand tale, and I was so amazed and moved and terrified looking at everything through his eyes that I totally lost track of him . I never appreciated (or probably...
