I think it must depend in part on the nature of the trial and the number of jurors they send into voir dire. I've never been called for anything but criminal cases, and I'm also always a 'reserve' juror for some reason, possibly against because of my profession, which means I only have to show up if...

I'm not overfond of truncating the threads too much. Health care is a huge issue in public finance, and therefore relevant to a discussion of taxation schemes, imo.

b.t., between you and Faramond I'm finding out what trials are really like! We have the same rule in our county as you have in Sacramento - one day, one trial - and I am called in for jury duty every two years like clockwork and never make it through voir dire. But I sit there all day staring at the...

Me too! Gorgeous lotuses, Northerner.

Lali, when I saw that waterfall I thought it might have been in John Bryant state park. They have some neat rock formations there, too.

Just finished watching this movie. Sublime! Del Toro - wow!  The most stunning indictment of fascism that I've ever seen in a movie, I think ... and also the most circumspect because of its being offered through the lens of a fairy tale, and all the more powerful for that. It is not reall...

Just wondering if he's back yet. :blackeye:

I know it's too early, but I'm on pins and needles.

They should have gone after him for battery first, instead of blowing their wad on a murder indictment. It's a lot easier to get a conviction for a lesser charge, and a lot easier to get a conviction for a greater charge when the defendent is already in prison. That would be my guess, anyway. Btw, I...

It's been argued, I don't know with how much accuracy, that a single-payer system would enormously reduce the transaction costs associated with the current system ... I'm afraid to speculate about the transaction costs as such, for the reason you raised, solicitr: government seems infinitely capabl...

eta: generally I am in favor of putting as much control as possible directly into the hands of individuals From what I gather, you don't think this particular method is a good way of doing that. Do you have a plan you think would work better? It was not that I disgreed with the particular method yo...

... Missouri voters chose some time ago to dedicate a 1/8 of a cent sales tax to the Department of Conversation.
... which is sort of like the Department of Conservation, except that instead of actually doing something about the environment they just sit around and discuss it? :)

Very interesting thesis, Lord. M. (You start such interesting threads!) I would have to give this some serious thought. It's not clear to me that the Ba'ath governments of Iraq and Syria would have agreed to enter into alliance with us because I'm not sure they perceive the enemy as common to both o...

He's back! :D Anyone care to guess which of the 5 arguments in favor of rape eventually turned the tide and caused a unanimous vote in favor of guilt? I'm terrible at second-guessing other people's motivation ... but I think that a woman who says that another woman would do anything to keep a man sa...

Sometimes societies decide that pitting their citizens against one another in a life and death struggle is not the best way to survive.

Jn, is that the budget, or the budget-plus-all-the-latest-appropriations budget? Those are the distributions from 2005. It has been true for a long time, though, that ~40% of our federal budget goes for elderly care, whereas military spending which used to be our largest single expenditure has been...

Federal government sources and uses of funds: (varies slightly from year to year - these %'s are from 2005) Sources of Funds : Social Insurance Receipts (pmts. into Medicare and FICA): 34% I...
