We are down to only a couple of books left in the Liaden universe, and are still loving the series after almost a year of nothing else as our primary audiobook that we listen to together. It's really quite good. Just don't start with the earliest one chronologically. It is definitely a prequel and not the best place to start the series.

So there was the passing remark in The Vor Game - "I don't know, wasn't there a Chinese Emperor who ended up pushing a broom somewhere?"

Does that mean Pratchett's Lu-Tze was based on a real Chinese emperor?

I just finished Cetaganda. The series really does get better as it goes along.

Next is Ethan of Athos. My library doesn't have it, and it seems to be out of print. So I'm going the Interlibrary Loan route, and it should be at least a couple of months.

Ethan of Athos is a stand alone, and not connected with Miles. You can read it whenever. I read it last because I was sticking to Miles-verse.

The next Miles one would be the collection of three stories - Borders of Infinity. But two of the stories are chronologically earlier - did you read those?

I haven't read those, and I see that they're out of print and also my library doesn't have them.

Miles is mentioned in Ethan of Athos, but that story is not at all necessary to the Miles story line.

I don't have any of the series in print, just audio. I just looked and the two you mentioned are available on Kindle. If you don't have a kindle, you can read them on a regular computer screen. (crossposted with Impy)

Borders of Infinity IS necessary to the series as a whole, in my opinion. Each of the novellas is the basis for further character development later on. Later books will refer back to those events and it won't be clear, really, if you haven't read them.

So it appears that, despite our best efforts, Borders of Infinity is inaccessible to me. Would it be terrible if I just skipped it and went to the next one?

I feel bad for having made an offer I can't deliver on (Amazon allows loans only within the same marketplace, and Jude and I are obviously in different world marketplaces).

You can skip the books, of course, because each story can stand on its own legs but there will be a blank in your understanding of Miles' psychology.
