(The stuff is basically just the worst weed. It takes over everything and grows absurdly fast and huge and is practically unstoppable. I've grown to hate the stuff.)

That lady doesn't seem like quite the badass though.
There are at least two varieties that I know of. They both grow fast, but one is essentially an invasive weed that will take over absolutely every square inch if allowed, and the other is much more reasonable and will grow more or less where you put it.

You need to get a Giant Panda as a pet to control it. Problem solved.

A friend posted that on FB yesterday. Pretty cool and resourceful. I wonder how long that lasts. That wasn't the first furniture she's made.

Yov, as with many things, the best attribute are also the worst (Bamboo: Fast growing: Renewable! Fast growing: Nuisance! ) :)

It might be fun to grow some here, I could always use more dust screening between us and the gravel road. There are a few varieties that are said to be able to overwinter in this climate.

Yup, there are some clumping varieties that don't take over the entire zip code. We had some in our yard. It was nice to always some to cut down for tomato stakes.

I had no idea there were cold hardy varieties of bamboo! Slow growing ones too. I might have to give this some consideration. I loved walking through the giant bamboo forest in Hawaii. The sound of the swaying bamboo was unique.

It’s a great word, innit?
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

:D Honestly quite a few words were rather foreign to me but I was able to pick up on the context. ;) All in good fun.

And I think I have a new favorite word. Oh yes.

'Jesus Christ on a bike/bicycle' is for some reason, a popular swearing phrase in some places, expressing disbelief/astonishment. I first ran across it in a Spider Robinson novel, which is a bit strange, as Spider is Canadian, and I'd never heard anyone else in Canada use it.

Couple of other things you might not be familiar with: twee = affectedly or excessively dainty, delicate, cute, or quaint

An Garda Síochán/gardai - Irish police

Bin =garbage can. Actually, I thought Bin Laden was kinda a cute play on words... :D

Shite = Irish version of...oh heck, I'm sure you can figure that one out for yourself!
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

I got a laugh out of 'Jesus Christ on a bike'. That wouldn't be a 'naff' costume in the US but it would likely leave more than a few scratching their heads!
I think I recall 'twee' from Monty Python or something. I picked up on the bin thing but it was a bit slow to register. It's nice to have confirmation of Garda Síochán/gardai - Irish police. I presumed.. but that's not always wise! As for shite--I hear the same expletive pronounced 'she-ite'. :D

In these parts one is more likely to hear "shee-it." *sips delicately from her china teacup*

Listen to the end. What a voice for such a young person.

"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Its brilliant, apart from the growl. She'll tear her throat/vocal chords to bits doing that.

I wondered about that, Al. I wonder whether that was intentional or a spontaneous thing in the moment.

Intentional I'd say. Trying to copy the likes of Mariah. Sheesh.
