I had a co-worker once who insisted on calling her friends "girls" no matter that they were in their 50s. I tried to call her on that once, and she just stared at me with such dull incomprehension that I gave up trying to explain.

OT Followed Prim! My @Frelga Twitter is locked to keep me from getting into arguments with bots, so you'd have to follow me to see it, but I do retweet pretty gems and medieval manuscripts, among other things.

I'd love to see those! Will follow.

It must be a writerly thing; lots of the other writers I follow tweet interesting and lovely things like that, in addition to the advice and the griping.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

1776, a 1972 musical about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It has John Dickinson say to to John Hancock, "Don't forget that most men with nothing would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich than face the reality of being poor."

Apparently Nixon personally asked for the line to be removed, which it was, until the DVD release.

Just saw RBG in the flight. Really well made documentary.

Congratulations to Green Book for winning Best Picture at the Oscars despite not being a particularly good movie. It is an inspiring story about how one shouldn't let great obstacles, such as really being pretty lame, prevent one from pursuing dreams of success and acclaim.

Funny Oscars. Loved seeing Olivia Colman win, and disappointed at Green Book's.

Having recently watched it, Shoplifters should have been the winner in the best foreign film section. Even better than Roma, and it's so full of heart and warmth and sadness.

I personally would pick Roma as best, but Shoplifters was really, really lovely. :)

Al, how does it compare to the 2004 version (which was also harmless fun, IMO)?

I picked up one of the comic books recently, which I thought was far better quality than the old moves. So I wondered if the new adaption was to a higher standard. Oh well.

Critics absolutely trashed the new one, if that means anything to you. (Which I'm pretty sure it doesn't. :P)

Finally saw The King's Speech. Loved it, not the least because it was like watching the 'prequel' to The Crown, which I very much enjoyed. So much I never knew (which makes sense, not my country, not my monarchs) but an amazing story nonetheless. Added quite a bit more depth to The Crown series (hoping season 3 comes to Netflix soon).
The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.

"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

I remember I'm really liking King's speech. :)

In honor of a little movie coming out this weekend, I re-watched Infinity Wars and omg I love that movie sooo much!

(Figure we'll leave the with-spoiler Endgame discussions for the Marvel thread over the weekend. Fair?)

I won't even see That Movie until probably mid-May. I am not entirely sure that I want to see it.

Please don't spoil it! :)
