Roger Zelazny's book series has been credited as one of the main inspirations for 'Game of Thrones.'

The Walking Dead creator is looking to find TV's next Game of Thrones.

Robert Kirkman and his Skybound Entertainment banner partner Dave Alpert are adapting beloved science fiction/fantasy franchise Chronicles of Amber for television, THR has learned.

Kirkman and Alpert are teaming with Vincent Newman Entertainment (We're the Millers) to develop author Roger Zelazny's book series for television. A search is underway for a writer to adapt the book series that has sold more than 15 million copies globally before the project is taken out into the marketplace. Chronicles of Amber has been credited as one of the main inspirations for George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones. Kirkman and Alpert will exec produce alongside Newman, with the goal to take out the project to cable, streaming and premium cable networks.

First published in 1970, Chronicles revolves around Corwin, who awakens on Earth with no memory but soon finds he is a prince of a royal family that has the ability to travel through different dimensions of reality (called “shadows”) and rules over the one true world/dimension known as Amber. The 10-book series is broken into two arcs — The Corwin Cycle and The Merlin Cycle.

"Chronicles of Amber is one of my favorite book series of all time, and one of my main inspirations for working in film and television,” Skybound CEO Alpert said. "Getting to produce this project is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. I can’t wait to share this amazing story with a new generation of fans.”

Added EP Newman: "The greatness of the Amber universe is attested to by its millions of fans across the globe as well as its influence on so many other literary works. I can’t think of better partners in David and Robert with which to bring the Amber novels to television and other platforms."

Author Zelazny, who died in 1995, is one of three important friends listed on Martin's personal website. In a memoriam piece, Martin called the author a "storyteller without peer" who created "worlds as colorful and exotic and memorable as any our genre has ever seen."

Chronicles of Amber marks Skybound's latest TV foray. It joins AMC's The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead as well as Cinemax's Outcast. The company is also prepping Five Year, Mastermind and docuseries Heroes and Villains: The History of Comics for AMC.

Chronicles of Amber comes as Game of Thrones continues to be the gold standard for genre series. HBO's Emmy-winning drama led the pack of nominations for the third year in a row, with multiple networks looking for a slice of the fantasy pie. Starz has found success with Outlander, while MTV renewed The Shannara Chronicles for a second season, among others.

I only read the first two, and I liked them much better than I did GoT. I'd recommend the books.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I picked up the series in a garage sale years ago, but quit after the first book. I don't remember a thing about them. They got shelved with the other books during a cleanup and I never got back to them.

The first five are very entertaining. In a 60/70s fantasy way. And the good part is, unlike, Martin, Zelazney actually finished this series before he died.

My favorite Zelazny is "Doorways In The Sand", not part of this series.

I'd watch this. There are no dragons, though (that I can recall).
