No, not Treebeard...
The group involved in this quote is very diverse.

I think we're going to need another hint...
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Here's the quote again:
So it is in Fangorn. But not spoken by Treebeard. It is spoken amongst a group of racially diverse people. Now, which group of racially diverse people enter Fangorn? And whom do they meet? Who is also of a different race...What can I do for you? Mystery? that's not so! Aloud to myself, was talking about.

Its Gandalf the White to the three Hunters.
'What? In riddles?' said Gandalf. 'No! For I was talking aloud to myself.

Is it Bard: "Black arrow! I have saved you to the last. You have never failed me and always I have recovered you. I had you from my father and he from of old. If ever you came from the forges of the true king under the Mountain, go now and speed well!"

Is it Fingon, seeking to spare Maedhros further pain: 'O King to whom all birds are dear, speed now this feathered shaft, and recall some pity for the Noldor in their need!'
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It's really interesting that those two quotes are similar enough that I first thought of the Bard one. But I knew in the back of my mind that there was another quote that was the correct one. Even though it is getting to be ten years since I did the bulk of the work on Arda Reconsructed (how could that possibly be!), I still have The Silmarillion pretty deeply engraved on my brain.
I'll bring a new one soon.

Are the three dots in the original? Was the speaker interrupted?

No, and no. The ellipses for some reason replaced a different type of punctuation.

Is the "friend" referring to an inanimate object?
