Oh! I completely forgot about the King of the Dead.
Can it be "To fulfill our oath and have peace"? That seems too short.

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That's it! I did say that the translation was much longer than the original. Isn't it amazing that it changed that much and reached equilibrium in one set of translations?

Do not kill; the hobbit is to prevent them from harm.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Really? You never heard the Dead men that Aragorn recruited referred to as the green scrubbing bubbles?

Haha. No... or if I did I've forgotten. Very appropriate, though.Voronwë the Faithful wrote:Really? You never heard the Dead men that Aragorn recruited referred to as the green scrubbing bubbles?

Do we need a hint? Here's the translated quote.

Is it spoken by Gollum?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No.
The original has "hobbits", plural and without the "the".

Is "Do not kill" a fairly accurate translation of the first part of the quote?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It conveys the same sense, yes.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is "hobbits" used in a general sense, or does the quote refer to specific hobbits?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Generic. I mean, general.

Is it from the Scouring of the Shire? Frodo saying there is to be no killing of Hobbits?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That's it.
Although possibly not the quote you are thinking. There are two that are similar in content, but the first one did not do well in the translation.
