Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Not Sauron (that's why I said not "Vice President"). Someone else who was offered a "position" by Morgoth.

I missed this post. I'm not sure I would call it well-known, but I think it is a compelling scene.Jude wrote:Is it a fairly well-known quote?
Neither the speaker nor the speakees are Ainur. But the speaker is a different 'race' then the speakees.

I don't remember him. Was he a Maia?Inanna wrote:Uff.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I think that is one of the unnamed mates of Shelob.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Here's the quote again so people don't have to look back to the previous page:
Legal notice King's blessing. Lower than the massive welfare and other options
The original quote was longer, but only one sentence, though two clauses separated by a semi-colon. I think only one word is completely unchanged, but the meaning of the translated quote is as different from the original as it seems at first. At the time that the statement is made, it is not apparent that the speaker is someone that Morgoth would want to offer a position to.

Nope. Remember that I said that neither the speaker nor the speakees are of the Ainur (e.g., either Valar or Maiar) but that the speaker is a different race than the speakees. I will further clarify that both the speaker and the speakees are Children of Eru.

Fëanor's not an elf? Okay, I'm way overdue for a re-read of The Silmarillion. Let's make it one of my 2017 goals...

Fëanor is an elf, but he never (to the best of my sometimes faulty memory) addressed anyone of a different race other than those among the Ainur (in other words, he passed out of the picture before men and dwarves passed into the picture).

The speaker is, as you have already guessed, an Elf. The speakees are Men.

To be more specific, the speakees are two young men.
