Here's the quote again, since we are on a new page.
Voronwë the Faithful wrote:As I said before, the original is the last two sentences of a longer speech, the last one of which I have quoted or paraphrased often. It changed a lot, but interesting the sense didn't change that much.
If necessary it is. There is peace of mind.

Hopefully someone will find my hints to be encouraging.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
You're in the right territory, but what the full quote?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Nothing seems to be a good fit. Maybe this one?
"so do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No, you were closer before! The correct quote is right after the one you referenced.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Sorry, I must be obtuse. I can't find anything close.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
You literally were one sentence away before. I still find that to be an encouraging thought.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
In which case you also were meant to have it?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
And the next sentence as well. Well done!
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Wow. I never would have got that.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
But you did! Though with some hints. As I said initially, while the words changed a lot, the sense really didn't change that much. "you were also meant to have it" became "Yoda-ized to "if necessary it is." And "that may be an encouraging thought" became "there is piece of mind." Pretty much the same meaning; completely different words. Fun!
Your turn.
Your turn.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
This was quite a long quote and Translation Party kept crashing, so I split it in half and stitched the two translations back together.

And Oregon.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Probably!

LOTR?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.
