Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I guess it must be part of this statement, "'How do ye of uncouth race dare to demand aught of me, Elu Thingol, Lord of Beleriand, whose life began by the waters of Cuiviénen years uncounted ere the fathers of the stunted people awoke?'" The first part, before Thingol names himself?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Find the mistake!
ETA: Interestingly, in the translation process it went completely away from the original so that it would have been completely unrecognizable, but then veered back towards the original. Very strange!

Is the gist of the original quote like the final translation?

Not really. Actually it is closer to the reverse.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is the original short and pithy like the translation?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Not as short and pithy. It's about twice as long, maybe a bit more.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it from the scene in The Prancing Pony? when Frodo disappears?

Inanna, no, but just a little earlier than that. And it does involve Gandalf and a hobbit, but in a different way.
Jude, no I don't think so (though honestly I am not sure).

Does "mistake" occur in the original?
