Was this spoken by Aragorn?
The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

Is that Gandalf at the gates of Moria? Something about how Merry of all people had the right idea?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Frelga's on the right track...

... and when I say Frelga's on the right track, I mean that all she needs to do is provide the exact quote and she will have solved the mystery.

Who is he saying it to? Context, I want context, people.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Frelga is correct! The context is, Gandalf is grudgingly admitting that Merry might have given him a clue in solving the riddle of how to open the doors of Moria.
The quote is rather condescending, don't you think? Imagine if I said "Frelga, of all people, has gotten the correct quote." I would rightly be considered rude. But Gandalf gets away with it, because, well, he's Gandalf.

And this was after he threatened to use Pippin's head to knock on the gate.

But yes, there is no shortage of condescension in some of those passages. Kinda makes it more realistic, really. Nobody is nice all the time.

Moria! For some weird reason I instead imagined the Gates of Gondor.

As we wait with barely-concealed impatience for Frelga to come up with a new quote, here is a cute German Shepherd puppy throwing a tantrum:
