The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it Frodo talking about food?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it said in Bree?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

After Bree, not about food.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
So it is Frodo speaking?
Is it only Frodo and Sam in the conversation?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It is Frodo speaking. Sam is present, but so are a few others, and the remark was not directed specifically to Sam.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It's spoken during the journey to Rivendell. So that should tell you everyone who's present...

That's the one!!!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That's Bilbo at the Council of Elrond:
"Say no more! It is plain enough what you are pointing at. Bilbo the silly hobbit started this affair, and Bilbo had better finish it, or himself. I was very comfortable here, and getting on with my book. If you want to know, I am just writing an ending for it. I had thought of putting: and he lived happily ever afterwards to the end of his days. It is a good ending, and none the worse for having been used before. Now I shall have to alter that: it does not look like coming true, and evidently there will have to be several more chapters, if I live to write them. It is a frightful nuisance. When ought I to start?"

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It sounds like Thorin to Róac Carc's son: "Also I would beg of you, if any of you are still young and strong of wing, that you would send messengers to our kin in the mountains of the North, both west from here and east, and tell them of our plight."
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yep. I thought it would be an easy one given reference to "the mountain" and "relatives"

There is something interesting about this. But you have to wait until you get in.

Earlier.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is the translation fairly accurate in meaning?
