Are we still waiting for the quote?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

"I shan't call it the end, till we've cleared up the mess. And that will take a lot of time and work"

Well, first someone needs to identify this one:
You must call the mess at the end of it. Take a lot of time and work.

Didn't Al just do so? That certainly sounds like the right quote to me!
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it from The Hobbit?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It sounds like the original might be "it would make the hair on the back of your head stand up" or something similar. And these colloquial expressions are generally spoken by hobbits.
So this might have been spoken in a scary place - the Old Forest, Moria, Mirkwood, Cirith Ungol, or Mordor...
Am I kinda-sorta on the right track?

Is it Gimli, talking about Saruman: "The words of this wizard stand on their heads"
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Hmmmmm? Warm as in ... ?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Not the speaker, not the location, but the quote is getting closer to the original.

Is it Bergil to Pippin: 'I wager I could stand you on your head or lay you on your back.’
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
