I will never not get momentarily confused and think that the character name is Gerbil.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Eat it, remove the wolves at the birds eating them at least.

Said in a tree?
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Not exactly. ;-)

There is one element of the translated quote that is completely absent from the original and I can't figure out where it came from.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Yes, at least the "birds" part. Eating (or at least a synonym thereof) is in the original. But no birds.

Is this related to the mysterious disappearing wolves between Rivendell and Moria?

Hmm, was it spoken by or to Saruman?

Nope! But arguably close.

The speaker's statement was a relief to the people being spoken to, who thought that something different was going on.

When you say it was arguable close to Saruman, was it spoken by or to Gandalf the White, during the brief time they thought he was Saruman?

Found it!

Gandalf to Théoden: "Grievous is the fall of your men; but you should see at least that the wolves of the mountains do not devour them"

Yup! Well done!

What I meant when I said that it was "arguably close" to having been spoken by Saruman is that when Gandalf the White was revealed to the Three Hunters he said to them "Indeed I am Saruman, one might almost say, Saruman as he should have been."

Your turn, Inanna.
