The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Does "time" in the original context refer to rhythmic time, or chronological time?

Chronological.
Here is the quote on the new page: These too in their time shall find that all that they do redounds at the end only to the glory of my work.

"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Huh? Your earlier posted quote was different...
'You just said "your getting shorter": you've obviously been drinking too much ent-draught and not enough Prim's.' - Jude

Is that the answer?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

Here's a new quote. I'll try not to give the answer away this time.
Find a place to lie down. Don't go down. It's more expensive for me.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is that either Sam to Frodo or Frodo to Sam?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
While searching The Ainulindalë for the quote (didn't find it there), I did discover an interesting fact: it has only four paragraphs that don't begin with a conjunction.
It's one of those fascinating linguistic tidbits that I think Prim and vison would have enjoyed. *sigh*

Yes to the former (but I think not only to Frodo, though it is not 100% clear).elengil wrote:Is that either Sam to Frodo or Frodo to Sam?
Jude, that previous quote was in fact written as part of the Ainulindalë, but was moved by Christopher to chapter one of the Quenta, Of the Beginning of Days, in the editing process.

Meaning that Gollum was present?Voronwë the Faithful wrote: Yes to the former (but I think not only to Frodo, though it is not 100% clear).

I believe so.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
So Gollum is somewhere nearby but Sam and Frodo aren't aware of this, or aren't completely sure?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I would say that the text is not entirely clear whether Sam is addressing both Frodo and Gollum or only Frodo. But probably it is both of them.
As might seem likely, it the last sentence of the quote that is most changed.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
At this time, are they still on good terms with Gollum?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Arguably, Sam is never on good terms with Gollum. But I would say that they are on as good terms with him as they were.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I checked all the places I thought would be likely, and couldn't find it. So maybe we need another hint?

Well let's try to narrow it down without hints.
Does it take place prior to Ithilien?
