The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yes (those are the rules, right?). It's a quote. And I started re-reading LOTR when we started this game, so it's not too far into the book.

Hmm. I'm scratching round in the back of my head for something about a voice like thunder on the hilltop...

Is it Frodo's dream at Tom's house?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That's a memorable passage, but is it a quote? I think it's narration. I have LotR shelved just to my right but my desk is so piled with papers and random crud (after a summer of desperately intense work) that I can't get at it without knocking things to the floor.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Are any of the words in your sentence the same as the words in the original quote?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yes, although the word that is capitalized is not actually capitalized in the actual quote.
And no, it's not Frodo's dream. Or anyone's dream. It did occur at night.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
This is pretty obscure, but is it Aragorn saying to Frodo "It is like lightning that leaps up from the hill-tops" when describing the white flashes that they saw coming from Weathertop that turned out to be Gandalf fighting the Nazgûl?

The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yes!!
ETA: I guess it is obscure, for some reason this incident stands out to me. Gandalf waiting for them at Weathertop, Frodo a day away... All the missed paths..,

I like that bit very much, too, Inanna. In fact that whole wilderness leg of the journey. Tolkien really captures what it's like to be out in the wild places with night coming on.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
This should be very easy, I think (but I want the correct quote, not just a description):
"Still hid the Golden treasure lid hinges, keys, or box"
"Still hid the Golden treasure lid hinges, keys, or box"
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

A box without hinges, key, or lid,
yet golden treasure inside is hid.

Grrrf. Got to try to find something. But there's that book that if I try to pull it out, I drop stuff on my toes.
I get it. I should change my life. . . .

I actually do have it on the Kindle. Too tired this week to fire it up and search.

That seems to happen often. Try it again in the morning!
