Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
So one of them is "stubs"?
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

That's right! (Though in a different form). The other word that I referred to (the "f" word) is unchanged from the original.
Here is the quote again, so that it is on this page:
Unverified claims compensation stubs fall, every year our legs are great.

"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Since "stub" is one of the words, I'm guessing "legs" is a stand-in for "toe". So this is a possibility:
Gimli wrote:I shall claim full amends for every fall and stubbed toe, if you do not lead us well.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That was one bizarre translation.
"Stubbed toe" would have come to my mind eventually, I hope.

New quote:
The first sentence has nothing at all to do with the original, but the second has two key words that survived. It is unpleasant. This message is not only the cloak of the hobby.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it when the Fellowship are being blindfolded by the Galadhrim entering Lothlórien? Don't have my books but I think its Gimli saying something like "Very well then but I shall hold you accountable for any fall or stubbed toes"?

Are you addressing me or Voronwë?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Ah sorry Jude, I only saw the post before the new page!

At least you know you would have been right
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
For easy reference, here's the quote again:
It may be easiest to make guesses, and I can say "before" or "after", and you can narrow it down like that...
If it helps, the first sentence had archaic but easy-to-recognize forms of a couple of very common words. I think the translator was not familiar with these forms, and made something up from scratch. The second sentence preserved a couple of key words, but lost the overall meaning. It is unpleasant. This message is not only the cloak of the hobby.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Cloak was retained. And message?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
"Message" was also in the original.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Does the cloak refer to the cloak from Lothlórien?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Nope!
I would call it kind of a metaphorical cloak.

Hmm. Taking your previous hint about translations, is it Bilbo in Rivendell?
