Still earlier
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
The quote has “beast” in it? Am guessing, yes. Tolkien liked that word.

Yes and know. "Beast" does appear but it is not the full word.
Here is the quote on the new page.
Here is the quote on the new page.
Voronwë the Faithful wrote:And these people are fly of trees and beast hunters. So we are their friends and if they don't leave, we'll get them in the best way we can.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is the original "beasts"? As in, "hunters of beasts"?

Is this Yavanna and Aulë talking about the creation of the Ents?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it to do with Melkor?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is the speaker disparaging the people he's describing?
Edit: or the people she's describing

Only in a very indirect way.Inanna wrote:Is it to do with Melkor?
The actual individual speaker is not identified (it is a group that is quoted). And yes, I would say that they are disparaging the people they are describing, and are definitely not happy with them, and will add that one of the words in the original is the exact opposite of the word used in the translation.Jude wrote:Is the speaker disparaging the people he's describing?

Correct (with the caveat that "friends" is included in the word).
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Unfriends?
Is it a screenshot from Melkor's facebook page?

Yes to "unfriends". No, to the Facebook page.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I don't have a guess, I'd just have to re-read the whole book at this point, but this tickles some little memory in my head about some army or group discussing going into a wooded land that was inhabited, and take it. I don't recall if these were men or elves on either side, but it does sound passingly familiar...
The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF
