ETA: Bernie (who is who I did mention) is far more "far left" than Warren is, and is also much more abrasive (though Warren is seen as more threatening by Wall Street).

Sorry! I saw "Biden" not "Bernie", thought it was an odd comparison. :)

Bernie is much more of an analogue to Corbyn.

Cerin wrote:I realize Warren has taken pains to define herself as a fervent capitalist, but the media would love to see her fail and I've seen many instances of them referring incorrectly to 'the socialists' when speaking of Warren and Sanders. So if people do as you (and others) are suggesting and take a warning from the UK election, I'm afraid they will lump the two together as similar 'radicals' and look to the establishment candidates.
I'll respond to this in the U.S. election thread, to avoid further osgiliating this one.

Boris Johnson's withdrawal agreement cruised through its first reading in Parliament 358 to 234, and will be debated 7-9 January. Unsurprising, given his majority. It looks like the chaos of last year is over and Brexit will go ahead on 31 January. But there's no shortage of surprises so far.

The EU has ratified the withdrawal agreement, and the U.K. leaves the EU 11 am on 31 January, London time. Then, who knows?

Taking into consideration events from both sides of the pond, John Scalzi called it "International The Anglosphere Shooting Itself In Its Own Dick Day."

Although I don't think Australia did anything wrong and Canada is unproblematic as ever.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

It seems Greece wants to demand the return of the Elgin Marbles as part of the EU trade deal.

UK position is split between "no, we stole them fair and square," and "wait, they are sculptures? I thought they were actual marbles."

The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.

"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

This happened in 1987, and it's far from the most embarassing thing Johnson has ever been involved in, so I doubt it will make much of an impact, although it's obviously topical:

Gove and Johnson 'sold as slaves' at Oxford student charity event

The thing which I found striking was that even after "furious bidding" Gove only fetched six quid. Even accounting for inflation, I'd be a bit insulted to be honest.
