Or this: excess zealotry combined with lack of common sense and consideration for their neighbors with smaller craft.

Well, whoever was responsible for the sinking definitely didn't think of this:

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

It's all very symptomatic. They've got boaters who don't follow boating safely rules, shoppers who refuse to wear a mask in the midst of a pandemic, and the embodiments of the Second Amendment who are complete muffins at holding a gun.
I've said it before. Fascism is the ideology of the aggrieved mediocrity.

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Sadly I think this is true and Trump knows how to incite such grievances.Frelga wrote:It's all very symptomatic. I'm just slightly embarrassed to admit I laughed aloud at the 'Poseidon for Biden'.

Re: Trump's America
the Texas Trump boat parade was not the first to sink boats. A boat sank on the Willamette river in Oregon during a Trump boat parade on Aug. 16. The boat that sank was not part of the parade. There was also a parade on the Potomac Sept.6. They are called 'Trumptillas' Loud and Proud. That is certainly suitable.

Make America Buoyant Again? Maba?
The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

Trump Emerges as Inspiration for Germany’s Far Right
It should really give people pause when a sitting American president becomes an inspiration and "savior figure" for German far-right/Nazi's. It seems the QAnon conspiracy propaganda sickness has spread there too. Much like the Wikileaks and Pizzagate nonsense.

That's the problem with presidents these days, so freakin' entitled.
Remember, law and order is only for other people.
Trump suggests he would 'negotiate' a 3rd term as president because he is 'probably entitled' to it

Re: Trump's America
1. Get elected
2. Start a reelection campaign chest the day he is sworn in
3. Tell supporters that the more money they send, the more likely he will be reelected, to their benefit
4. Use the funds lavishly on self, family, cronies, and election expenses
5. Repeat this cycle as long as it is pumping money to the right places

Maybe if they spent less money on avocado toast, they'd be able to afford their own criminal defense teams and stop relying on handouts from taxpayers.elengil wrote:That's the problem with presidents these days, so freakin' entitled.

Re: Trump's America
That he has been campaigning and spent taxpayer money from day one on his rallies and re-election[/i] is disgusting. Even his 'press conferences' are personal political events. He doesn't understand (nor care) that he is a servant of the people. That's probably why he so desires and envies the likes of Putin, Kim Jong-un, and the House of Saud. He's building his own dynasty which he fully expects Ivanka and the rest of the family to inherit.

I agree. It's clearly absurd. John Oliver is really good at laying out/explaining the situation.

Re: Trump's America
Sweetie and I were listening to a podcast called Revisionist History on the way home. This episode was on Northern Ireland, which I know in the most general and high-level terms as being the fighting between the Protestants and Catholics but I have no direct understanding of any of the actual issues or grievances involved.
But listening to this episode felt like listening to a podcast on the history of America in 2020 from 50 years on. You didn't even really need to make any substitutions, if you simply accept that Catholic meant minority and Protestant meant majority the parallels to right now today USA are mirror-like.
It's terrifying, and enlightening both.

Re: Trump's America
elengil, I haven't had time to listen to the podcast yet, but it would be interesting to have Alatar weigh in on 'The Troubles'. There certainly are parallels as it was a period of violence, divisiveness, unrest, and ethno-nationalism. I recall hearing about the IRA (National Irish Liberation Army, an Irish republican socialist paramilitary group) and bombings and such when I was growing up. The Troubles went on for a long time, but there was a lot of upheaval here in the states at the time too.

Re: Trump's America
I'm not sure whether to what this here or in the Covid thread, but I'll put it here for now.
Close Trump adviser Hope Hicks tests positive for coronavirus, sources say
Note that the article says that Hicks, who is a young, healthy woman, is experiencing symptoms, not just testing positive, though it is unclear how severe they are. It is also unclear how much close recent contact she has had with Mr. Trump, but she was in Cleveland for the debate, and she is a very close, trusted advisor.
