World News Thread
Re: World News Thread
John Oliver did a piece on the recent policies in India. I had zero knowledge about any of this outside of what Inanna has posted here, so I was curious to hear what she thought of it. It's 20 minutes but if you find the time, I'd love to hear your perspective:

Yov, I think you might have meant to link this one?
The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I'm glad people are resisting such hate, but it's a shame we have to be confronted with it in the first place.

Re: World News Thread
Here's a story that hasn't gotten a lot of attention that's more than a bit scary.
Ukraine continues to battle forest fire near Chernobyl

Re: World News Thread
The forest, in case this isn't clear from the article, is what "mopped up" the radiation. The fear of what would happen if the forest caught fire was long present, the answer being mostly "we'll all be in trouble".

I had seen headlines regarding the fires but hadn't read much given everything else going on in the world. I wonder if Trump is admonishing Putin as to why he didn't have people raking/cleaning up the forest so as to prevent this.

He'll probably just use it as an excuse to hawk some unproven therapy his family owns a stake in.

There are now Facebook based reports that things are REALLY REALLY bad. I normally don't trust Facebook reports but I don't trust official reports either.

Not really sure what to believe on this one. But I doubt it is good.

Re: World News Thread
Thanks, Frelga. I'm not always as mindful of stuff like that as I should be.
