Not the newest anymore, another spambot has registered after you...

Anyway, welcome! :)

How wonderful to have (a) a real person and (b) you as our 200th member!

Er...Legolas is an Elf, not a real person. ;)

Welcom Legolas the Elf, may you have lofty high elf dreams.

:D

I merely meant that it's nice to welcome someone I know is a real person, even if he's also an Elf.

I mean, I'm a hobbit, and yet I seem quite real to myself, if not necessarily to anyone else.

I'd check his IP address if I were you. Sounds like a drive-by porn spammer to me.

Can I ask if there is still a security code thing that you have to enter to register? That keeps the bots at bay usually.

Not any more, Crucifer—there's scanning software that can defeat most of those. We do have one, and also an "Are you human?" question that's surprisingly effective against bots, I understand.

But in a lot of cases these are people being paid to spend their time registering on boards, and in that case nothing we can add will keep them out.

What we're hoping to do is add a software mod that makes people's profiles and our memberlist unreadable by nonmembers and Googlebots. Then the spammers will have no reason to register here.

I’m probably unleashing some unholy jinx here, so I am going to knock on wood the entire time I’m typing this, but it’s kind of odd that b77 hasn’t been getting very many of these spambot registrations. I deleted one about a week ago, but as far as I know that’s all we’ve had in the last year. HoF seems to have a new one every time I log on here.

Strange.

tinwë, all I can figure out is that we got onto a list somehow, and b77 <knock wood> isn't on it yet.

Do you guys have the registration mods that give you an image of words you have to type into a box and also ask the "Are you a human" question? Apparently these both still do keep out some bots and are worth having. And if we're able to get the mod I was just talking about, you guys should look into it, too. It sounds as if it works.

Here's a link Mr. Prim found (he admins our little church message board and has been besieged by these things). It's a topic on a phpBB messageboard. The first post is really long but is packed with useful information about fighting spambots.

We have the visual confirmation turned on, that’s the image thingy, but that’s it. I don’t think we have the human question installed.

We’re not having problems now, so I guess we’ll wait unit we are before we do anything, but it’s nice to know there are options available.

Well, as long as whoever's Rangering then knows that the mods are available, that works.
