Was this Bilbo, instructing Frodo to take notes during his journey?

Flotsam and jetsam chapter?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Is it Hob Hayward: "They do more gathering than sharing, and we never see most of the stuff again."
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I heard that in Moriarty voice.

I must say, this retains little resemblance to the original quote, which to narrow things down from the start, is from The Hobbit.

He was not available. Here, he leaves may mess.

In the original, is "leaves" in the sense of "depart", or things that are found on trees? (assuming that the word is actually in the original)

The former (although in the original it is 'leave' not 'leaves'). Good job focusing in on one of the few words that remained (mostly) unchanged.

The "leaves" refers to the speaker threatening to leave them if the listeners don't help him do something.

Is it Gandalf to the Dwarves regarding Bilbo? (what was JRRT's preference: Dwarfs or Dwarves? I always forget)

Or is it sometime before the Battle of the Five Armies?

Yes, it is Gandalf to the Dwarves about Bilbo. And yes it is some time well before the Battle of Five Armies.

(When the original copyeditor "fixed" all of the occurrence of the word "Dwarves" to "Dwarfs" Tolkien was furious. However, he noted that the correct plural should really be "Dwarrows" but that that would have been too confusing. He does use that form in the name "Dwarrowdelf" for Moria.)

Okay - so it is what I think it is. But I don't have my book with me right now....

(That was one nervy copyeditor!)
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”
