I have never gone to a Maundy Thursday service. I will put this on my must-do list for next year.
(I did attend the Good Friday service, which was poignant in its starkness.)

It is a little similar to several such Indian rituals as well.
And in the everyday, touching feet is considered a big mark of respect (I always jump in India when younger folks touch mine).
