Bilbo was a lot like Tolkien himself: doomed to spend his life tinkering with and revising his writings, so that in the end he managed to leave a small handful of finished works and a ton of promising fragments.I had thought of putting: and he lived happily ever afterwards to the end of his days.
The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Oops - okay, here it is; yet another place where Bilbo quotes the end of his hypothetical book:

And here's the new one!
I should not end it until I resolve the confusion.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
From LOTR?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
The word "confusion" is not in the original, but it's kinda-sorta a synonym of a word from the real quote. I can see where it came from, anyway.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it Bilbo?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!

Was it spoken by or to a hobbit?

Sam to Frodo?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Not in Crickhollow. Much, much later.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it said around the same time as "Is everything sad going to come untrue"?
