The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Isn't that Danny Boy?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It's actually the inverse of Danny Boy.
"It's me, it's me who has to hurry, and you who has to stay.
But I'll come back again, your sad heart whispers..."

The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

Danny Boy? It's on my Culann's Hounds CD, where even I can tell that the girl shouldn't be trying to hit those notes, but it's also been stuck in my head recently because it's in an insurance commercial.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
What, saying it isn't Danny Boy isn't enough of a hint?
The meaning of the first sentence is reversed.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Was this perhaps Gimli expressing his regret at having to leave Lothlórien? Was the gender of the last pronoun reversed as well?

Good guess. Not correct, but a good guess! You have the correct speaker. The gender of the last pronoun is NOT reversed.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It sounds a lot like someone lamenting that they have to leave a fallen comrade.
So if it's Gimli, I'm going to say - at Balin's tomb?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Wait, scratch that - it must be this:
Lamenting Gandalf, not Balin. Now long shall I journey ere I have joy again. It is I that must hasten away, and he that must remain.
