We're talking about this one, right?

Ah, I was barking up the wrong tree! Sorry, hobby. The tree I was curious about was this one:

I agree that yours looks like a pine.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

And the tree Prim has in her post is not a pine by any stretch of the imagination. It may be (not likely) a fir, but it is in no way a pine.

Holby, beaches, babez. . . . have fun!

Next week I will be at this beach:

My favorite in the world.

Very little sand, and no babez, but it's got caves and tide pools and whales and sea lions.

Heaven Prim !!!

Many people have a misconception of Hawaiin beaches. Most of the islands are far too young to have sandy beaches, so they truck in sand to the resorts. Most are lava benches waiting to be eroded and look quite a lot like the one in your pic. Blow holes, lava, coral....Not much sand or babez !!.

Unless you know where to find them !!! w000000000000000t !!! =:)

As you no doubt do. :)

You have a good eye—that beach is a lava bench. The vantage the photo was taken from is the core of an old volcano.

Hawaii will be swallowed up by the sea sooner than a geologist can say Jackie Robinson.
It is so new and so unstable geologically speaking.
Part of the same eruption that caused the Aleutians.
Its all about our little tiny perspective.
Hawaii (the Big Island) is the only place on the planet that is still growing.
So young and volatile still. Such an amazing place.
I will post pics.
Then all can see what this planet is really all about geologically speaking.
I suspect there may be a babe or two thrown in for good measure. I mean I'll take a beach babe over a lava bench anyday. :)

Eucalyptus? I don't know what kind of eucalyptus trees they have in Oregon, but it doesn't look anything at all like the ones I've seen here in California.
Primula Baggins wrote:Ah, I was barking up the wrong tree!
Oh, nevermind, you were talking about a different tree. :D
truehobbit wrote:Looks like a pine tree to me. :)
(They do grow to strange shapes if they have room.)

Pine tree in Scotland
It might be a pine, but like Prim said, those look like leaves rather than needles. I have to admit that it does look like that Scottish Pine.

I thought it might be some variety of oak. We have some ginormous oak trees in California, but the really big ones I've seen don't look like that.

While we're waiting for the Hawaii pictures, here are a couple of views from the Finnish countryside:

Beautiful!

I've been to Norway and Sweden, but not Finland. Yet. I love the landscape in northern countries.

I also love the look of Northern Places - pity the climate there isn't as warm as I like it. :P ;)

Prim, so we were talking about different trees! :D
No idea what yours could be. I'd say it looks familiar, but I can't put a name to it. :)
but being a cheerful hobbit he had not needed hope, as long as despair could be postponed.
