Re: Trump and others charged with conspiring to overturn 2020 election in Georgia
One tried to overthrow the US government, one failed to fill out the HR forms for an office romance. Guess who gets punished? What a crock; Trump doesn't deserve to win, but his pusillanimous "opponents" certainly deserve to lose. This is a critical moment in history--Putin and Trump are w...

Re: Chaos in Congress
If they're truly concerned about Chinese companies having too much influence over Americans' lives, maybe they should start with manufacturing instead of social media.

Re: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine
Every time I see a headline along the lines of "Biden administration responds to latest Russian atrocity by imposing additional sanctions on...", all I can think is why the h3|! weren't you doing that already.

Not the free version (DALL-E can do that sort of thing), but it can invent and describe them.

Re: AI! AI! A ChatGPT is come!
Now that I have more experience with it, it's a little easier to recognize that a bunch of its responses are just (extremely) wordy versions of "404 Not Found". By far, its strongest use case is generating original text where a bit of absurdity is a feature rather than a bug. If you ask it...

So pre-GPT messageboard text could become the equivalent of low-background steel (I feel a bit like a bot right now in that I’m not sure if I’m making that up or read it somewhere before). we might be sitting on a goldmine here.

Re: AI! AI! A ChatGPT is come!
All in all, I'd say it is shockingly good at generating text from a prompt and will follow whatever proddings you give it (until you try to make it stop being so nice). But it is dangerously bad at explaining what something means, providing facts about a requested subject, or critiquing existing wri...

Seconds. Also, I've found some boundaries: ascii.png music.png . It's also very cool that it can explain its choices. It's been a longstanding problem in AI that you end up with a model that makes predictions, but there's no way for you or it to understand or describe why it does what it does. Along...

Stayed up way too late testing its creativity with various bizarre requests: The fellowship of the ring arguing about whether balrogs have wings: Frodo: So, do Balrogs have wings or not? Gimli: Of course they do! What else do you think those massive shadows were, sweeping through the halls of Moria?...

Here's an 18th-century style advertisement for mithril, using the long s symbol: --- **Advertisement** **To All Gentlemen and Ladies of Distinction** **The Wonders of Mithril** By the Providence of the Most High, the rare and wondrous metal known as Mithril hath been discovered in abunda...

Mithril, unfortunately, is a fictional metal from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth and does not exist in the real world. However, if you're looking for high-quality metal products or jewelry, you can explore reputable jewelers and metalworkers who specialize in crafting precious metals such as silver,...

A bit spooked now. Asked it to write a sonnet about the Mines of Moria: In depths where shadows dwell, beneath the earth, Where ancient halls of stone lay silent, cold, The Mines of Moria, of fabled worth, A tale of glory lost, of tales untold. Within these halls, where once the dwarves did delve, A...

I asked for a press release about the 2024 elections in Gondor, and it came up with something serviceable but rather bland; at least until the end: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GONDOR DECLARES 2024 ELECTIONS: A QUEST FOR A NEW STWARD Minas Tirith, Gondor - February 20, 2024 - The realm of Gondor, in the wa...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread
That same system is I believe a canonical example of the paradox where light fines lead to more of the undesired behavior (in this case, leaving your cart in the lot instead of returning it to the corral), because it lets people feel that they've paid for the right to do it.

I don't think so, and when asked that question directly, it agrees. But as one can see from my edit (final quote), it has a bit of a yes man tendency.
