Re: The last movie you saw Thread
Really want to see Get Out this week. Just saw Logan, which was pretty intense. Someone should strap Zack Snyder down and make him watch how to do a "serious" superhero movie.

Re: Hopefully this doesn't break my son's English teacher
I was glad to hear the teacher agreed with me... and as it turns out they revised the curriculum to no longer include assigned books for SIXTH grade this year, and will get to seventh grade...next year. And possibly eighth.

Hopefully this doesn't break my son's English teacher
So Kian loved the first book in English this year ("Ender's Game") and hates the second ("The Book Thief"). As in refuses to read past page fifty. The teacher alerted us to this fact while I was out of the country, and my wife dutifully assured him we'd do something about it. I ...

A little like Cate Blanchett in that regard--it takes a solid director to pull her actual acting ability out of her.

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!
Watched the first episode of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency last night, which managed to carry the tone and manner of Douglas Adam's story into a new setting rather well, I thought. Wisely, they kept Dirk English, though the story is set in Seattle and the other main players are American (...

Well, if LOTR was about one of the surviving dwarves, maybe.

Right--but his own show is written such that you aren't missing anything vital about the character if you don't see JJ.

I know characters cross in from DD and JJ, but I don't think I've missed much by not watching them first. It's like they (and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, represented mostly by references to "the Incident") exist but don't impinge.

I am enjoying "Luke Cage" in three-episode chunks, which isn't so much bingeing as having an extra slice.

Re: Stranger Things
I like a lot of pieces of Stranger Things, but I don't think they always go together into a cohesive whole. I call this the "X Files" effect, and a lot of shows with long arcs suffer from it to one extent or another. And I wish Winona Ryder was allowed more of an emotional range, which ev...

Man of Steel isn't the same without the big Dolby speakers in the theater turned up to chest-squeezing volume.
Not saying that's a bad thing.

It's pretty clear that Luke is being set up to serve in the mentor role occupied first by Obi-Wan and then Yoda in the original trilogy. I wouldn't worry about him overshadowing the new characters.

Re: Slow motion videos
Good article. It's obvious they have very different temperaments, and that difference comes across in some of the middle seasons in particular...but the respect they have for each other's work and commitment carries them through.
