Re: The biggest question

I wonder if the appearance of the eagle is something they plan to return to. At the time it didn't make a lot of sense to me, because it seemed to be approving Pharazon, or at least, not objecting to what he was doing - and the later eagles we know from LotR would surely have reacted, and perhaps ha...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

He does feel a bit like a loose end now. I don't suppose we've seen the last of him, though, because he has one of the three, and he does play a part in the story of the rings. Perhaps he'll make more sense in a later season?

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

Beren's mother whose name I can't remember right now. Emeldir. Thank you! What I really appreciate about Tolkien writing women is that he is not actually writing a world of men in which women exist as props. Not only does he put women in power, he understands the impact of the forced powerle...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

It is absolutely canon, just not necessarily in the battle babe mold that Hollywood likes. Proportionally, Tolkien wrote far more male characters, but he wrote many women, and he wrote them well. And many of them were in the positions of power or had heroic adventures. This, yes! Tolkien's writing ...

Re: Rings of Power: Choices in Adaptation

Sounds like a good bet, I'd say, because they are drawing so much into it. I'm waiting for Goldberry, Celeborn (I think I read somewhere that he has been cast, but I can't imagine how they can introduce him), Anárion...

Oh. I didn't realize they replaced the actor.
Yep - Adar 1 on the left, Adar 2 right: Image

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

I liked the character of Adar very much in the first series because he gave me a glimpse of a credible ruined elf, and I was struck by some of the moments where we saw him remembering - and almost regretting - the world into which he was born. There was a sadness about him, always. I think he was wr...

Re: The Collected Poems of J.R.R. Tolkien

Pity - I can't read the whole review, but it began well - and better still, I have the books (pre-ordered, thanks to an unspent Amazon token from my brother). No time yet to read any but the two I knew I was looking for. I really appreciate the way they've presented the poems as a developing sequenc...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

E4 and still enjoying it.. I'm starting to think that they sat down with every Tolkien book and letter and made a list of all the characters and creatures that might have existed in some form in the Second Age, and then dreamed up a way to weave them in to the story. That sounds forced, but it doesn...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

Seen E1 and not-quite-all of E2. Loving it so far, and I'm hard to engage in anything just now - too focused on the hornets that keep finding their way into the kitchen at night. But I sat through the whole of E1 completely spellbound. That's not to say that there aren't occasional er-what? moments ...

Re: The Collected Poems of J.R.R. Tolkien

Yes! GBS and Companions of the Rose are there - those are two I was hoping for. I've known some of Geoffrey Smith's poems for years from a 1918 anthology. There was always something different about them - a timeless quality. When I finally connected him with Tolkien's friend it made sense. Ten years...

Re: Another "new" Tolkien book

The book came out yesterday here and I really want it, first of all for the pictures. I've collected books with Alan Lee illustrations since I first came across 'Faeries' in the 1980s. I was over the moon when I saw the first version of LotR with his work that came out for Tolkien's centenary. Sadly...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

The other possibility is that Galadriel does tell them and that Celebrimbor (and perhaps Gil-galad) refuses to believe her. That would be my preference. Yes, that's true. If he came back and she was there, I'm sure she would tell them. But I'd prefer to see Gil-galad hold out against Sauron. I'm st...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

I think the way is open for him to return because Galadriel didn't tell them who he was. So he could come back, being frightfully charming. Elrond and Galadriel wouldn't trust him but they may have left; Celebrimbor probably would. As for Sauron knowing about the other rings, if it's already happene...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

I agree that is a possibility, though perhaps it is wishful thinking on our part. ;) The implication in what we saw so far is that the Three were the only ones made, particularly with the (I thought fairly silly) talk about needing to make something small and round, like a crown for the "High ...

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

I wonder if it's just that we haven't seen the making of the other rings yet. At least one of the interviews suggested that there were things they could have shown in the first series but decided to hold over for series 2; there are also suggestions that the second series will focus more on Sauron's...

I haven't seen a link to this (sorry if I've missed one somewhere): https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/rings-of-power-finale-sauron-actor-interview-1235240895/ I'm intrigued by the explicit reference to "things that I adored reading in The Silmarillion that we’re going to see. Those r...
