Unfortunately for us and for the Iraqi people, I think it's too late for the "right" answer.

Where is Robert Gates these days anyway? Summer is a nice time to travel.

The western political mindset is convinced that all peoples of the world should live in the framework of democracy. I don't think this is a reasonable expectation; democracy isn't a desired end in many places in the world. Economic freedom is certainly a universal desire - even if it means simply ha...

I agree with you Frelga, that conversations about religion tend to bring out intense reactions and fervent admonitions. I think it is of great value to discuss faith and religious conviction as often as it can be tolerated. I think it is important to understand where beliefs come from and how they h...

Are we seeing the disenchantment of the masses - again?

Has political naivete given way to the facts of life - again?

Maybe I don't wanna grow up.

Trying to get to the television to watch last Sunday's Giant's game was like running a virtual gauntlet of domestic penitence. When at last I was able, 2 innings later, to sit down with TV remote secure in my hand the cable station broadcasting the event went dark and silent. For several inn...

I think the sportscasters for the major leagues can be just as engaging as the sport event itself. The voices of the Giants TV broadcasters have become as familiar and as comfortable to me as the couch I sometimes doze on while watching the game!

We simply do not have in the United States a tradition of political scholarship on the Arab world to which we can turn at a time like this. Jn :agree: We do not know these people and yet we insist on wrestling with them. They are strangers to us and alien to our ways of being in the world and we to...

An excerpt from http://neurotic-iraqi-wife.blogspot.com/ (And yes, only one opinion, but....consider it. This is probably not an isolated perception.) "So yes, the American government was wrong, the American government failed and failed miserably. I talk to people here, and like one anonymous w...

So, is it in the "nature" of the Iraqi people to embrace our "training" or anything American for that matter? An article such as the one VT offers makes me feel all the more certain that there is a lot we don't know about this side of the world. If we knew who we were dealing wit...

Aren't some anti-depressants actually narcotics? Then you have psychotropic medications too that are prescribed for some who are diagnosed as clinically depressed.

Gee.... just when you think you're all alone in the world. 8)

I think what we are seeing and will most likely see more of in coming weeks is this form of political subterfuge intended to impact the American public. Our military is strained, the American people are sick of the war, and our allies are disenchanted with our policies in Iraq. I think the Iraqis kn...

Ditto Prim , ditto. I still love watching my kid. He doesn't play baseball anymore (an occasional softball game but mostly college rugby now). When he did play as a youngster, I was an avid fan. My oldest was catcher most of the time. I dubbed him my MVP one year (most vulnerable player) because of ...

Betcha no one did. :D But Einstein's view of God was hardly a conventional view, was it? It was not. Within the scienific community, and I think to some extent the medical profession too, there is an undercurrent of awe, brought on by the realization that we don't have an answer to every "Why?...

Change is inevitable, I agree. It will also cause pain and division, but that's always been the case. The issue of ordination of gays is already splitting my church right down to the congregational level, between people who see the current official policy as perpetuating injustice, and those who se...
