Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

A new Quinnipiac poll shows Beto O'Rourke losing to Greg Abbott, 52-37%, in the 2022 race for Texas governor. Looks bad! But a Jan. 2018 poll had O'Rourke losing to Ted Cruz by 18%. In the Senate election ten months later, O'Rourke lost by 2.6%. So if the governor's race were to change by as much as...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

In a new Monmouth poll, President Biden's approval rating is 40%, which is lower than it's ever been in that poll. But the same poll finds approval for his Build Back Better bill at 61%, exactly where it was in the previous Monmouth poll. (A different poll yesterday found Biden beating Trump 46%-45%...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

On Monday, President Biden had a conference call with the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the U.K. to discuss what response, if any, western nations should take if Russia launches a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, something that Russia is signalling may happen. (As you may recall, Russia in 2...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Thanks! It appears that the briefs in that Connecticut case (in which a doctor's office may have mistakenly told a patient, and the patient his girlfriend, that he didn't have a sexually transmissible disease, which put her at risk) do touch on some aspects of this issue, although the circumstances ...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Actual sentence from a Politico article about how Vice President Kamala Harris is extra careful about tech security, which leads her, for example, not to use Bluetooth devices (which may be easier to hack): "But still, should someone who travels with the nuclear football be spending time untang...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Yes, it all comes down to what was in the Trump's mind (and any aides who knew he had Covid). And what his doctors knew. On Sunday, the Washington Post had an article that found Donald Trump was personally exposed to more than 500 people between the date we now know he tested positive and the date ...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

Durham's office responded in a court filing to Sussmann today. In an earlier filing, Sussmann's lawyers had noted that Baker in 2019 and 2020 interviews described his 2016 meeting with Sussmann in a way that is exculpatory for Sussmann. Durham says those interviews happened too long after the incide...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

Good point about the possibility of media reports not accurately describing the case. I would note that the two numbered quotes above are from actual documents in the Sussmann case. Which doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't other documents that would explain the seeming contradictions or othe...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

I like this analysis of the Sussmann case by Benjamin Wittes at Lawfare : On the Special Counsel’s Weird Prosecution of Michael Sussmann Wittes thinks that John Durham is trying to pressure Sussmann so that he can get to Sussmann's clients and sources and paint a (misleading) picture in which the T...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

There were ten different investigations into the 2012 Benghazi attack, six of which were conducted by Republican Congressional commitees. So any claims by Republicans now that the House Select Committee investigation into the much more serious 2021 Capitol attack goes too far in issuing subpoenas fo...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Right. Now there is a suggestion of impropriety surrounding Gen. Charles Flynn's actions on January 6. Previously there was mainly some astonishment that the brother of Trump's felonious former factotum was among the military decision makers that day.

Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

Congressman Devin Nunes has announced he'll be retiring at the end of this year. Nunes, a Republican from California, formerly chaired the House Intelligence Committee and in that role engaged in some shenanigans (e.g., pretending to have secret information that he ostentatiously delivered to the Wh...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

On Fox News yesterday, Donald Trump said that if he had not fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017, "You might not be talking to me right now about a beautiful book about four years in the White House ... I don't think I could have survived if I didn't fire him." That sounds like a con...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

One counterargument to my view (that mainstream media is biased in favor of Republicans) I've seen about this claim specifically is: 200,000 jobs was normal in 2018 but weak compared to other months this year. Another argument I've seen that addresses my view more broadly is: so what if the media i...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

I have no idea where this belongs, but emails leaked by the not necessarily reliable Trumpist lawyer Lin Wood purport to show that in 2014, Fox News host Tucker Carlson asked Hunter Biden, the son of then-Vice President Joe Biden, to write a letter of recommendation to Georgetown University for Car...

Re: Will Roe v Wade be overturned? How do you feel about that?

The Democrats have certainly been victims of bad luck ( three court vacancies in one presidential term ) and the weighting the Senate gives to small rural red-leaning states, and I actually suspect it would have come to a showdown over Roe sooner or later, but it's unfortunate for them it's come so...
