Re: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

I am missing something about the nuclear question in all of this. They say we can’t do anything because Putin has nukes, and any country that has nukes is treated differently. Doesn’t that work both ways though? We have nukes, the UK has them, and France, and by extension all of NATO. The nuclear de...

Re: Gun Control Debate

Saying semi-automatic weapons have no business in every day life is just.... (trying to think of the right word) .... inaccurate. As long as firearms are legal to own, semi-automatic ones will be the preferred style. Single shots for *anything* is just taking a risk of something bad happening durin...

Re: Gun Control Debate

I tend to get annoyed when someone tells me that since I don't know anything about guns I'm not qualified to talk about them. I felt that way when I started reading this article, but as I read it and began to understand I realized the author was right. He does a good job explaining the difference in...

Re: Trump's America

It almost seems as if his appointments are deliberately crafted to make people call into question the positions themselves, and make the positions as absurd as possible. This is certainly true of his pick for Education Secretary, a person who has no experience in education, never attended public sc...

Re: 2016 United States Election

It isn't possible to know after one election whether the result represents a trend or an aberration. It certainly is a trend, and one the started nearly 50 years ago with Nixon’s southern strategy, was fixed in place with the coronation of Ronald Reagan as Savior of the Nation, and has continued un...

Re: 2016 United States Election

I blame it on the last 30 years of the Republican propaganda machine brainwashing us into believing that government is evil and politicians are corrupt and liberals are communists who want to kill babies and force everyone into complete dependence on government. I’m numb. Just dumbfounded, and I can...

Re: 2016 United States Election

I still have some hope for North Carolina, but it is tenuous at best. There are quite a few down-ballot issues that should motivate Democrats to get out and vote here - HB2, teacher pay, voter suppression, extreme gerrymandering, etc. I am hoping those things will make up for the lack of enthusiasm ...

Re: 2016 United States Election

The ballots aren't counted, but party affiliation is. There has been a larger then usual number of Democrats voting early, and it's safe to assume not many of them are voting for Trump.

Re: So there's this riot going on right now

Yes, things were much better last night. I went to bed early and was relieved to wake up this morning to the news that my city was not burning. Let’s hope things stay that way tonight. I see that the protesters are out again, but so far everything is peaceful. We really do have some good people here...

Re: So there's this riot going on right now

I'm tired of seeing my city and state in the international news. Seems like it's only for things that are utterly horrible. The HB2 story broke when we were in Ireland, I remember riding in the car listening to the radio and hearing something about North Carolina and thinking, oh cool, they're talki...

Re: So there's this riot going on right now

So, another police shooting, another man dead, more riots. This time in my hometown of Charlotte. The initial shooting took place right outside the front door of the townhouse I used to live in before I moved eight years ago. I know a few people who still live there - not friends exactly, I haven’t ...

Re: Bluegrass & Appalachian folk music

Surprised that no one has mentioned this here, since several people have mentioned his name, but Bluegrass legend Dr. Ralph Stanley passed away a few days ago, June 23. Stanley was one of the pioneers of genre and formed the Clinch Mountain Boys with his brother Carter in 1946. He remained an active...

Re: Gun Control Debate

I can’t remember if I posted this in this thread before or not, but my brother, who is a Methodist minister, and his wife, also a Methodist minister, both of them extremely liberal, as well as both of their children, have all recently become recreational shooting enthusiasts. They all own guns now, ...

Re: 2016 United States Election

I have voted Republican in the past, not for president, but governor and other local and state offices. I swore to never vote Republican again at the national level after the impeachment of Bill Clinton, which I saw as one of the egregiously partisan acts ever (I didn't care what he did in his priva...
