And in any case, I'd skip an OTT Jackson-esque battle scene for excellent character work any day. To me, GoT feels a lot grander, larger and more epic than the LOTR films, and that's because we see more of the world, and it takes its time to roll out the story. It feels both bigger and better than ...

Actually, all those elements of GoT make it LESS marketable to a wide audience than it could be without that level of sex, violence and vulgarity. That's why it's on HBO - which has a limited subscriber-ship. If a popular network that's part of most people's cable package decided to give LOTR a go,...

I am not saying HBO’s adaptation of “Game of Thrones” is not faithful to the books. As I have not read anything of George RR Martin I cannot really comment on that. But “Game of Thrones” fits perfectly into the type of drama TV series that has been popular lately. Just look at “Deadwood”, “Rome”, “T...

Season 1 begins on Sunday in America! A number of critics saw episodes 1-3, and they are gushing over it like fanboys and girls. It's an almost unprecedented level of praise. I hate to say it, but the writing, directing and photography of this show is so vastly superior (IMO) to PB and J's LOTR and...

What is your take on "The Last Ringbearer"?

What is your take on the book "The Last Ringbearer" by Kirill Eskov? Has anyone actually read it here? I read parts of it a couple of weeks ago. Suffice to say, I found it pretty trashy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ringbearer Middle-earth according to Mordor: http://www.salon.com...

Re: Unsystematic review

A nice review, Beutlin. You seem to have responded most strongly to the same scenes I responded to. Though having not been overly fond of the LOTR trilogy (perhaps because I wasn't 11, and was set in my ways about films!), I have to say that DOS is my favorite of all five films. In fact, I think I ...

I would go further than that. Thranduil is probably the closest thing to Thingol that we shall ever see in a PJ film.
Quite true. Does he not mention “jewels out of pure starlight” during his conversation with Thorin? Not quite the same as a Silmaril, but pretty close if you ask me.

Nice review, Beutlin! Ack, I forgot to look for Colbert! Where was he? I saw PJ right off the bat at the beginning. Thank you, Lalaith! Colbert is one of the Mayor’s spies in front of Bard’s house. In the film there is a scene where you get to see all the spies communicating through certain signs. ...

Unsystematic review

I have just returned from my second viewing of „The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug“. I found the film superior to “An Unexpected Journey”, although it did not reach the heights of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. I cannot blame Peter Jackson for that, as no film has affected me on such a fundamenta...

So who's going tonight? Its on general release, right? It will only be released in the States tomorrow. I am going to see it tomorrow 4.00 p.m., Central European time in 3D IMAX OV. And I am going to see it again on Tuesday :), as my country's largest cinema screen will only show it in English once...

Tolkien lets me think, while Jackson shuffles me along at high speed for fear that I will think, and realize how shallow his vision is! I know this is the review thread but in my opinion Peter Jackson can be rather capable of handling drama scenes. And I strongly reject that notion that Jackson use...

Berlin Premiere

Watch it now!

Can be viewed in English.

A much better premiere compared to the one in L.A. IMO.
