Re: Brexit Carried - The Blue Tide

*waves at everyone* This is Labour's worst defeat since 1935. For the Conservatives to take Labour strongholds in the North East, where people will suffer most from Tory policies, is astonishing. But it's the Brexit factor. Many working-class Leave voters are in the North East. And even if L...

Re: Movies we are looking forward to seeing

Is it just me or is the Dune movie shaping up to be really exciting? It's got a great director and a fantastic cast so far. I've never been interested in Dune. At all. BUT. This Dune will be starring Timothée Chalamet, a wonderful young actor who broke my heart in the exquisite Call Me By Yo...

Re: Revisiting Rings

I am late to this party ... but I'll play. :) I prefer the FotR EE to the FotR TE - although I do hanker for the opening sequence of FotR TE, with the main title appearing under Frodo reading his book ... That worked so well! I very much prefer RoTK TE to RotK EE. I hate nearly all the extend...

Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns

Voronwë - To me, the whole thing smelled of folly from the start. I can't say I'm enjoying watching Britain go through this, but it's an interesting tale of populism and hubris. Indeed, River. And not just folly. Seems there are dark forces behind it all: :( This makes for a disturbing read: ...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

Phantom Thread ... hmmmm. Worth seeing for the gorgeous cinematography, the soundtrack ... and Lesley Manville, who is the only character I had any sympathy for. I'm delighted that American critics have discovered just how great this wonderful actress is. Vicky Kriepps is very good, but the story g...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I loved Lion. 8) Especially being an adoptee myself. The film deals with the pertinent issues in a sensitive and responsible way. Dev Patel is excellent in it - also gorgeous, lol. And as for that darling little boy playing his younger self ... I normally don't care for Nicole Kidman, but she...

Re: Star Wars, Episode VIII

Not gonna see this film after the last one made the original series, let alone the prequels, utterly pointless for absolutely no believable reason (except cynical nostalgia money). And from everything I've heard, this just reinforces it. Talk about beating a dead horse, they went further and butche...

Re: Idle thoughts on LOTR for TV

Ooooh, it's just like old days! I'll play. I remember the BBC take on Bombadil. I liked him, and Goldberry, but did NOT like Nigel Planer as Frodo. :( Come back, Ian Holm! Keep the hobbit age differences, have Frodo act his age, and keep Merry and Pippin distinct. Pippin must easily be identified as...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

Well, I've now seen gay romance Call Me By Your Name twice , and I want to see it AGAIN. ;) I love, love, LOVE this film. It's a first love, rites of passage story, set in the summer of 1983 in a sun-drenched Italy, and it's gorgeous and dreamy and heartfelt and deeply moving. It all feels intensely...

Re: Terrorist or Freedom Fighter

Here's the link I was speaking of - survivors and families speak out: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-39337760 I'm not offended by Al opening this thread: the adage that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter is a vexed one indeed. Gerry Adams' eulogy whitewashes McGuinne...

Re: Terrorist or Freedom Fighter

I would agree, and I would also point out that the IRA always delivered a warning before a bomb attack, to allow the area to be cleared. So when people died in IRA attacks, as they certainly did, is that because they didn't heed the warning? The IRA left bombs in cars and railway stations and so on...

Re: Scotland's historic vote and the possible end of the UK

Well. My original post seems positively quaint now. ;) The 2014 angst pales into comparison with the complexities and chaos of Brexit. The issue of Scottish independence is more complicated than it was in 2014. For example, there are some people who in 2014 voted for Scottish independence who...

I'm sorry you've been disappointed, Anduril. :( I loved Rogue One!!!!!!!!!!! I am very far from being a hardcore SW fan. But I saw it twice. Loved it. Al, I can't count the number of times I watched each and every one of those trailers, and then shared the excitement online. The early days, and the ...

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I really enjoyed Arrival. :) It's wonderfully atmospheric, it all feels very real, and Amy Adams is very good indeed - and how refreshing to have a female academic as the main character! (I also really like the 1998 film Contact , with Jodie Foster, which is very similar in many ways.) I have...

Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns

I freely admit that I am in something of a Remain bubble. Many of my friends, both RL and 'imaginary', including quite a few church friends, voted Remain. Yes, the Brexit vote was a big populist rebellion against the political elite. Yes, it has exposed a huge faultline in Britain. The Leave voters,...

Re: Brexit Carried - Cameron Resigns

Hi, all! * Anthy!!!!! :) Again, in my toe-in-the-cauldron kind of outsider-who-knows nothing way, I wondered this exact same thing. From what I have read, the EU may seem to many people as an important symbol of European unity, rather than a favorable political construct. The loss of perceiv...
