Sunsilver, I love the new Matlock, too. Kathy Bates is so good as both the devious attorney and in her home life. The relationship with her husband and grandson feels warm and real. I’m glad there will be a second season.

I’m enjoying “Watson,” but it’s in large part due to finding this version of Dr. Watson extraordinarily attractive in looks, voice and brains. Hey, this is the TV obsessions thread. I’m obsessed.

Re: What are you reading?

I’m most of the way through listening to “Lessons in Chemistry” and have enjoyed it. I particularly liked listening in the car, because I was free to pause the narration and yell in rage at the blatant misogyny she faced. I also laughed a lot, though.

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!

My latest TV obsession: “The Pitt” on Max. It just finished its first season of 15 shows, so it can be streamed. The entire season is one day in a busy, underfunded emergency room in a Pittsburgh hospital, with each show being one hour of the day crew’s shift. Noah Wyle, who was young Dr. Carter on ...

Well, if everyone else is reading “Lessons in Chemistry,” I believe I’ll do the same.

“Free” is the magic word. I think I’ll listen to “Astray” next.

Re: What are you reading?

What you say about “Lessons in Chemistry” reminds me of my 10th grade chemistry teacher. She told us that she could do complex chemical labs but was a terrible cook. Which made little sense, she said, since cooking is basically applied chemistry.

Re: What are you reading?

narya, I’m unfamiliar with The Expanse series, but it sounds as though I should give it a read!

Maria, I’m also intrigued by the xeno-archaeologist series. Another to add to the list.

Frelga, I’m blown away by that video. Bravo, Michael Spyres! Not only is his voice wonderful, he conveyed the humor perfectly.

Re: What are you reading?

narya, I also read “Killers of a Certain Age” and found it to be funny. My latest read wasn’t exactly escapist: “Life After Doom: Wisdom and courage for a world falling apart” by Brian D. McLaren, published last year. He wrote it in response to the climate crisis, but its insights also apply to life...

Re: The Last of Us

After much nagging and prodding by my son, who watched it when it first came out, I finally saw The Last of Us. I expected mindless violence and flat characters. Instead I saw an enjoyable, thought-provoking and yes, superb show.

Re: The all too early Season Two thread (possible spoilers)

I’ve seen the first three episodes and enjoyed them enough that I’m annoyed to have to wait for the next one. (Yes, I’m spoiled by binging.) Were they blaming Galadriel for Sauron’s return or simply for being taken in by him? I think the latter. If she had realized who Halbarad really was, he could ...

Re: The Whistler Gallery, NEW and Gluten Free

Thanks for the link to your gallery, Whistler. I've always enjoyed your work. In fact, I drink my morning coffee from one of the mugs adorned with your art almost every day (and have threatened anyone who dares to break one with painful, perhaps fatal consequences). Unfortunately, I am flat broke ri...

Re: Why Church?

That has been my experience as well, Prim. The end of the service always gave me chills, when the altar is stripped and the lights go down. For years I would slowly chant Psalm 22 (“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me...” while this was done. Now that I work nights, I can’t attend this service....

Sad loss: Ursula K. Le Guin

From NPR: Ursula K. Le Guin, a prolific novelist best known for the Earthsea series and The Left Hand of Darkness, died Monday at the age of 88. Across more than 20 novels and scores of short stories, Le Guin crafted fantastic worlds to grapple with profoundly difficult questions here on Earth, from...
