Re: The Art of Rhetoric, Debate, Logical Fallacies, etc

elengil, I'm happy to defer to your wishes as to the direction of the thread, but I would like to follow up on some comments already made. You said in your second post, "when one recognizes and understands such things, being manipulated is much more difficult." The idea of protecting onese...

Re: The Art of Rhetoric, Debate, Logical Fallacies, etc

I take everything at face value and assume the sincerity of the speaker. I'm not interested in a reality wherein it would be necessary to be constantly suspicious of my fellow humans. That would be so depressing, and I would be unable to cope with such a complicated psychological landscape.

Re: The Art of Rhetoric, Debate, Logical Fallacies, etc

DH took a rhetoric class, I think in High School, in St. Paul, MN. That would have been in the 70s. He mentioned that the debate team/class was too fierce for him and he opted out. I'm a big fan of logic, myself, but I have no formal knowledge of the subjects you've mentioned. I was once told by a l...

Re: Marvel Movie Madness

For whatever reason, I tend to find superhero movies kind of tiresome. It's possible I judge them on the basis of what they aren't supposed to be and thus find them lacking (the way I think reviewers sometimes do with other movie genres that I'm able to accept on their terms). I fought through some ...

Re: Marvel Movie Madness

I watched 'Endgame' on the strength of comments here, without seeing any of the others except the first 'Iron Man' and 'Dr. Strange,' and was able to follow, except for not knowing who the red-haired woman in the battle was who said, (para) 'You took everything from me.'

Re: Winter is Coming: A Game of Thrones (SPOILERS)

It seemed so obvious to me that Jon Snow should be king. (Haven't seen episode.)

edit

I did not agree with commentary I read objecting to Dany's 'turn.' Her cruel streak and megalomania were always in evidence.

Re: Winter is Coming: A Game of Thrones (SPOILERS)

yov, I don't understand why you forced yourself to watch something you hated. When I heard that Amazon was hoping to turn Tolkien into the next GoT, I thought I'd better watch it so as to condition myself as to what might be done to Tolkien. I made it through Season 6, but just couldn't sustain the ...

Re: Architectural Photographs

Oh, what a beautiful view!

My English history is sadly lacking, but I googled Harold II. I wonder if it was in tribute to his adversary that William built the church, or more of a tribute to his own victory, or perhaps he had a sense of history, or it was a combination of all.

Re: Architectural Photographs

Beautiful, Jude! Netting above the Rochester choir sounds like an excellent idea. I can imagine performances would be sub-par with choristers worried about being hit from above.

Battle Abby is looking quite green. Is that unusual?

I think the Gorecki Symphony No.3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) is the saddest music I have ever heard.

Re: Lord of the Rings series!?

I keep remembering the quote about wanting the next 'Game of Thrones,' which I think is the closest thing we have to a declaration of intent. I took that to mean, wanting something that will be similarly popular. Considering what it is that makes GoT popular might be the best way to predict the sort...

Re: fiber arts and handicrafts

Maria, I'm sorry you had to give up the needle felting; it seemed like a true calling.

Maybe you could sew a label to the back of the crocheted piece, telling about care, and also your date and location, so that if it endures, the people enjoying it will know something of its history.

I noticed that Hulu released 'The Handmaid's Tale' on DVD. Does Amazon eventually release their originals on DVD, or must one subscribe?

Re: TV obsessions—come on, admit it!

Has anyone watched 'Godless,' the Netflix 7-part Western? I loved everything about it. While full of homage, I thought the three main characters were subtly drawn and original.

I found it well-written and beautifully filmed -- and what a gunfight!!

Re: Pride and Prejudice: Adaptations of Austen

I've just watched 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' and thought it was quite funny, with many affectionate nods to the A&E production. The proposal scene did not disappoint. Anyone who's felt some frustration with these sisters might find it viscerally satisfying.

Re: Movies you stopped watching, and why

It involved excessive simpering, a curly do and a maddeningly ambiguous ending. (And I don't say the blame rests with the director, as it was an adaptation.)
