Thanks. I found it near the end of the grey havens.
It is different very much so, in this case, I like the movie version.

Books or Movies
I remember something like this at the great havens but is this from the movies only? Pippin- I didn't think it would end this way. Gandalf- End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to s...

Re: Looking for Source on a Tolkien Quote
In any event, I don't believe that there is any such quote in Letters . The closest I can think of (which is not actually from a letter but from notes that Tolkien wrote for himself on Auden's review of The Return of the King included in the book as "Letter" 183) is the following: I am hi...

Re: Looking for Source on a Tolkien Quote
Yes, that was my own copy mistake I had taken down long ago. I might have copied it from Carpenters' bio. But perhaps not.Voronwë the Faithful wrote:I don't believe that there is any such quote in the Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. And Tolkien would certainly have written "Middle-earth" not "middle earth".

Re: Back to the books (Nostalgia ain't like it used to be)
I split this off from the News from Bree thread - VtF (I can't find any existing thread where this would seem to fit, and I don't feel like starting a new thread, so I am sticking it here.) I first read Lord of the rings when I was around 10 years old and fell head over heels in love with the books...

Looking for Source on a Tolkien Quote
“If you really want to know what middle earth is based on, it’s my wonder and delight in the earth as is, particularity the natural earth.”
-J.R.R Tolkien
I am 99.9% sure I read it in his letters. Does anyone know which one?

Who is Your Favorite Hobbit?
I was thinking about this as I was finishing up another round of reading of The Hobbit followed by the LOTR. And I think my favorite hobbit is Bilbo. I find so much in common with him. I also like Sam and Pippin as a close second and third. So my question is, who is your favorite hobbit?

Re: He both loves and hates the ring look as he loves and ha
This might be the quote you're looking for: ‘What do you mean?’ said Frodo. ‘Surely the Ring was his precious and the only thing he cared for? But if he hated it, why didn’t he get rid of it, or go away and leave it?’ ‘You ought to begin to understand, Frodo, after all you have heard,’ said Gandalf...

He both loves and hates the ring look as he loves and hates
Looking for a quote similar to the above by Gandalf about Gollum. Is his only a movie out e or is there similar in the books? I remember in FOTR reading a quote that said Gollum hated the ring. I think it was by Aragorn. Does anyone know of a quote like this in the books?

Re: Looking for an Instance in the Letters of Tolkien or Car
Another poster found it for me. I knew I had read it. I thought it was in letters but it also reminded me of carpenters bio. Letters 89 To descend to lesser things: I knew I had written a story of worth in 'The Hobbit' when reading it (after it was old enough to be detached from me) I had suddenly i...

Re: Looking for an Instance in the Letters of Tolkien or Car
hmm, thanks anyways. It might have been the inklings biography but it is driving me mad not being able to find it. I just don't want to go read it all yet once more for the one interest, but it might come to that.

Re: Allen Lee and Christopher Tolkien on Ents in the Movies
I don't think that Christopher Tolkien had any positive things to say about any aspect of the films. Alan Lee, of course, was one of the designers responsible for the look of the films, including the Ents. I was watching the extras to the two towards yesterday and it it had nothing about his involv...

Looking for an Instance in the Letters of Tolkien or Carpent
I remember reading in the letters of Tolkien or in Humphry Carpenters Biography where a homeless looking man came to a church Tolkien was going to and Tolkien told the priest that the saint who the church had a statue of probably looked more like the homeless man than the statue. Does anyone remembe...

Allen Lee and Christopher Tolkien on Ents in the Movies
I was wondering if anyone knew if Christoper Tolkien or Allen Lee made any comments either positive or negative on the dedication of the Ents in the movies?

Re: Did Tolkien Ever draw an Ent or Huron?
I don't believe that he did, but when I get a moment, I'll look through Wayne and Christina's Art of The Lord of the Rings and see if there is anything in there. Yeah, I have that book and no, there is no drawing in it of an ent. I was hoping someone somewhere had found a sketch or something. I am ...

Did Tolkien Ever draw an Ent or Huron?
I was just wondering if he ever drew a picture or sketch of how he visualized the ents.
