Great posts, Sassy AND Nin! I don't have time to respond to either of them now, but I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge them. It warms my heart to see such thought and emotion.

I had two parallel thoughts today that touched on the subject of this thread. One I posted in another thread. The other was something that I read in Shippey's The Road to Middle-earth. I'm going to try to combine them here into a coherent post. As I said in the other thread, for me the various compo...

Elijah Wood is going to reprise his role as Frodo. Or at least he wants to.

"That's a pretty strong statement, to say that "it was being taken wrongly" Voronwë As I said before, I hate apologetics... I'm not sure what you mean by "apologetics" but what is going on here is called "discussion". And one of the hallmarks of respectful discuss...

I would agree with you if LOTR was written as a "stand alone" book (even with The Hobbit preceding it). But Tolkien was a myth-maker, first and foremost, and the world that is revealed in LOTR is not only rooted in that myth, it is infused with it. The real power of myth is not in the eve...

the Patriot Act and Related Issues

Why does everybody get so incensed over the bloody Patriot Act? What's so horrendous? Where has the Constitution been repealed? I'm sorry, but I can't get very upset about tapping some guy in Karachi calling someone inside the US. In fact, I bloody well hope the NSA is listening! Persons and goods ...

Indeed I did! I think little touches like that connecting the different parts of the story are very important, and I applaud you for including them.

It means "Clear the way! It's the sound that announces Sobo's arrival!" That is a song sung for the Soboninkun mask dance, which is depicted in my picture. I will be saying more about this in my thread about my trip, when I get to the part when we had the opportunity to experience Sobonink...

If you guys want to debate the Patriot Act and the so-called War on Terror, take it to another thread, and leave this one for discussion of the campaign. Please. (Of course, if you want to discuss the candidate's positions on those issues, it makes sense to do so here, but that is not what I am seei...

The effect will carry over to the other primaries in that the momentum of the race has shifted. Had she lost in New Hampshire, I don't think she could have reversed the trend. Not the race is completely up in the air. I don't think that anyone is pretending to know what to expect at this point.

More to the point, she desperately needed to win New Hampshire whatever it took, or risk having her campaign go down in flames. She took a calculated risk, and it paid off in spades.

I definitely recommend it highly. I was somewhat skeptical as to how much it would add above and beyond Douglas Anderson's Annotated Hobbit, but it definitely adds a lot. It is a worthy companion to the HoMe series.
