Since no one else wants to guess, I'll do so to keep the game moving. Bilbo to the Dwarves in response to his grumbling about stealing the cup:

"I should want hundreds of years to bring it all up, if I was fifty times as big, and Smaug as tame as a rabbit."
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Apt quote: Information nowadays does seem to indicate danger.

Wait, wrong book.

Jude, very good question. If I were answering on general level, I would say yes, no and/or maybe. But in terms of what the speaker is saying with this actual quote, the answer is no.

Is this a hobbit speaking? With some trepidation?

Yes to the first question. I would have to say no to the second question, but it required some thought. I would say with less trepidation then should have been applied.

Are Elves involved?

There is one Elf who is nearby but not particularly involved in what the quote is referring to. There is another Elf who is not nearby but could be said to be involved in what is being referred to.

There would be more than one Elf nearby at either of those places.

In other words, no and no.

Is this in the beginning of LOTR, when the Hobbits meet the Elves before they reach Bree?

No, later.

Again, there was only one Elf nearby.

It must be the first part of this quote:

Pippin to Merry: "I should like a bit of information as well as danger. I should like a look at that ball."

Looking at the context, I'm not sure why he mentioned danger .
