After three seconds watching Toby Jones on that YouTube video, I would like to say

he is a hobbit!

What's more, he had the most adorable worried expression on his face at the start, as if too-many dwarves were suddenly nosing around his larder.

:)

True, he is rather overgrown, at the moment. And we didn't get a clear look at his feet.

Toby Jones sure reminded me of a grocer, huffing and puffing . . . I like him.
The world is indeed full of peril, and in it, there are many dark places; but still, there is much that is fair, and though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.

Here's a brief interview with GdT, in which he reveals that they have four different actors in mind for Bilbo.

The video wouldn't play for me, Voronwë (may be US viewers only). But I found another report on MTV News that seems to be similar:

[Shame they couldn't get Alan Lee's name right :( ]

Yeah, I think it is U.S. only, which makes little sense to me. But oh well. Thanks for posting the other link. You would think that they would get the name of an Oscar-winning designer (and world-famous Tolkien artist) correct, wouldn't you?

A question: Are they moving ahead with things despite the court case? Or are they unable to get going until that is settled? I'd thought they would be starting production this year, which means they need to get actors and others signed on the dotted line as soon as possible.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

So far as I know, they are moving along without regard to the court case.

Don't think it's worth starting a thread just for this, but feel free to move it wherever :)

NEW EMPIRE HOBBIT COVER MARCH 2009 ISSUE
pride of place – on our cover and in our hearts – is our big special on The Hobbit. What’s that, you say? It’s not even out for two years? Well, yes, but inside our special feature, you’ll find a one-stop shop of information on the films that may be the most anticipated of the next few years.

Inside, we’ll tell you how the film finally became a reality after years languishing in tangled rights hell; why Peter Jackson stepped aside from directing; what might be contained in the mooted second movie; and just what director Guillermo del Toro has in store for the whole shebang.

Here’s a taster of our exclusive interview with del Toro: “Whatever The Hobbit ends up being, it has to ultimately blend seamlessly into the first movie of the trilogy. We have to respect the cosmology and the canon established by the trilogy and follow it.”

For more from del Toro, and more on The Hobbit, pick up the March issue of Empire – on sale Friday.

Thanks, Elen. You and your British brethren will have to tell us colonials whether there is anything new and interesting in it. My guess is it will be rehashing what we already have heard. Still, a cover story, almost three years before the first film is due out? That's pretty impressive.

Empire have always been mad keen supporters of the LotR films. :)

I will never forget that January 2001 cover, of Frolijah holding Sting.

Don't forget the "LotR -A Celebration" special supplement, with the great photos of the actors doing their thing with the Ring - such a gorgeous piccie of Viggo

Empire Magazine March 2009 Hobbit Cover Story

Ok, well first off, there's no new news...but that doesn't mean it's not worth getting your hands on a copy. It's great to have all the gossip we've heard so far brought together in one neat bundle. Plus, the article is beautifully presented, with Alan Lee's gorgeous paintings from 'The Hobbit', the "foil" map of ME, showing where the action takes place, details of the main characters & who might be returning, and a look at the front-runners for Bilbo. All this is laid against faux manuscript effect pages.

Some great quotes also:

Talking about the legal wrangle over getting the film on the road to reality
Confused? You should be - it's a saga so murky and complex it makes The Silmarillion look like a James Patterson novel.
there's also confirmation of who GDT is bringing into the Team:
He's bringing onboard his long-standing DP, the Oscar-winning Guillermo Navarro, who will replace Andrew Lesnie, while his penchant for practical effects should see Hellboy stalwart Mike Elizalde and Spectral Motion join forces with Richard Taylor's mob over at Weta for an effects-based jamboree.

Andrew Lesnie did a wonderful job as cinematographer. Its too bad he is not being kept on. But you knew that when they changed directors some of these things were bound to happen.

Elentári ... did they say who the new actor for playing Elrond will be? Or was that just a very good dream I had and Weaving will be back yet again?
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

sf - call me Elen if you like :)

It just says
Hugo Weaving's return is as yet unconfirmed, but del Toro's made it clear he's 'all for keeping the actors who originated the parts.' so if Weaving's available and willing, he'll be in it.
[edit] And, I must add, in the photo of Martin Freeman that they printed he's a dead ringer for a young Ian Holm. What's more, PJ knows him because he went up for a part in The Lovely Bones. Fingers-crossed!

Thanks for the info Elen.

Weaving is the one actor I would put at the top of the list to get a replacement. I simply cringe every time he delivers a line reminding me of the Cecil B. DeMille school of acting. Even DeMille may be to modern for Weaving. You could put him on the stage in the early years of the 20th century and he would not at all be out of place.

Well, we can all dream.

Freeman would be good. Who else is named as a front-runner for Bilbo?
