Speaking of joking, check out the delightful Twitter account of Emo Kylo Ren.
https://twitter.com/KyloR3n
If you've ever had (or been) a surly teenager, you'll laugh.
Examples:
Darth Vader had no father
I envy him
mom please don't even pretend you know what I'm going through right now
also we are out of conditioner
uncle lando said my helmet made me look like a depressed lampshade and then everyone laughed and high-fived him
i hate this family so much

Take my hand, my friend. We are here to walk one another home.

Wow. I find it incredible that anyone could think that scene is anything more than deliberate jingoistic schlock. No accounting for taste I guess.

No need to be mean about it...even if that scene is really dumb.Alatar wrote:Wow. I find it incredible that anyone could think that scene is anything more than deliberate jingoistic schlock. No accounting for taste I guess.

Maybe the differences here are in what catches your emotions—how much you care about the characters. While Independence Day is a guilty pleasure of mine, the scene Anduril posted never has moved me. I don't particularly like this character, and the scene strikes me as action-movie boilerplate. If I felt differently about the character, I'd probably feel differently about the scene.
I do know and like the character Han Solo, and in my one viewing (so far), I found his death scene quite powerful, even shocking, though I'd been spoiled for the fact that he dies months ago.

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

The ending of Independence Day was total jingoistic schlock from start to finish. Break out the Stars and Stripes, folks, and start waving it around... bleeeeeahhh!
You'd think the U.S.A. was the only country in the world that mattered.

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

That would be disappointing. Like there's only one black family in the Galaxy...

I agree. There are clearly two (Samuel L. Jackson's character).
