We try to feed the cows when the ground is still frozen in the morning, but that's not always possible. And the cows say that walking on frozen muck filled with hoof holes is pretty hazardous all on its own.
Additionally, the ground freezing at night means that the moisture isn't draining away. It just stays there until the afternoon thaw and doesn't have time to go away and then it freezes again.
This frozen muck phase has been going on since the beginning of the year. Every time I think it's going to finally dry up and solidify.... it snows again.
