Placebo Effect

Post by Beorhtnoth »

Mind and body are inextricably linked, to the extent that the belief one is being medicated can lead to symptom alleviation. This is described as the "placebo effect", and although poorly understand, it has measurable outcomes, sometimes outcomes that outperform medical treatment.
I think we can agree there is a placebo effect.

Which brings me to my queries.

To what degree should patients be fooled into thinking they are receiving treatment with the intent of provoking a placebo response, and should government policy include lying to its electorate "for their own good" if utilising the placebo effect helps combat epidemics?
