I've gotten a lot of really good hawk pictures recently, but I really like this one.

In Fairbanks in the dead of winter, when the days were only 4 hours long, I would often ski through the woods at night. I was surrounded by snow-burdened black spruce, silence, glittering stars, and bitter cold. Every chance encounter with the aurora overhead was unexpected and dumbfounding. They swirled across the sky like curtains in a breeze, contorting and sweeping, powerful and expansive, yet impossibly soundless.

Was there a deer carcass nearby?

No, just a bunch of campers. ;) It was at Pinnacles National Park.

I saw your photos on FB. Just lovely. I should put that park on my bucket list. I haven't been there since I was a child.

Two weeks ago I built a snowman. This week the crocus poked their beautiful little faces above the leaf mould and it's going to be 80F today. Next week.. we're going to have night time temps back below freezing. It must be spring. :)

Very nice!

The only thing I miss about living in a place that has a real winter is the real spring. When you spend three months in monochrome, the first green feels like a rebirth. And then when the ice starts moving on the river, the noise and chaos of it.

I don't miss it enough to move somewhere with the snow. :D

Same here - I'll take the extra 3 months of green each year. Or in the case of Fairbanks, Alaska, the extra 8 months of green each year. Crocus poking out of the snow were indeed a precious sight.

Now that I live in the Bay Area, I know that I can go visit the snow anytime I want to in the winter. (Or even into July, in some mountainous areas.) In the past 17 years, the urge has not struck.

The average growing season (frost free days) in Fairbanks, Alaska is about 49 days shorter than ours. Here, late winter/EARLY spring drags on forever and then it's summer. We don't usually have a gentle, gradual Spring. We could still see snow in May and have even had the rare frost in early June.
